Nematode problem, need heeeeeelp!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Whiskers had just a few nematode knots!!! i cut them all off and threw away. i am praying i didn't send these boogers home with tig, pj, stacey, dee, and all others!
now, this plant will probably be okay in rich potting soil, right? it is at least 7 feet tall and blooming.

Dripping Springs, TX

yuck! I just found tiny, tiny worms in the soil around some plants. The challenge never ends.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

you are right.....2 months ago i would have never dreamt i would have cork and nematodes!

Dripping Springs, TX

Now say it with me "Disease Demons of roots, dirt and plants go away!!!!!" Wow! I really need to eat something!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Arlene, isnt there a soil treatment for nematodes? Something new? I'll have to check. Can you post a picture of the roots with nematodes? I had 3 that constantly wilted this summer. I dug them up the other day and there weren't any knots on the roots, just some root rot. I know the Organic Gardening people recommend covering the soil with clear plastic in the summer and leaving it in place for an extended time to kill nematodes, but that takes too long. We used to be able to buy methylbromide and tent the soil to fumigate it, but no longer can we do that.

Cala, i have somewhere a link to UF, will find. i have read there i think that you can prepare your soil and cover with clear plastic for as little as 12 hours? will get back with the link, and a pic.

Thanks Arlene. You're a dear for doing this for us.

the solutions are near the bottom. some of these words are too big for me!!!!!

I wonder how old this article is. maybe they have done this already:
Some companies are working to formulate mixtures of these fungi, so that if you have a nematode problem you could add these species to your soil. Pasteuria (Pasteuria penetrans) is a bacterial parasite of nematodes.

this sounds like the safest way to go, if possible

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

We use Kalkstickstoff (it kills seeds of weeds and nematodes), a so called hot fertilizer.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I wonder if thats like "PREEN"

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Kalkstickstoff translates to Lime ticking off. I wonder if it has lime in it? I found a whole page on it on google but it is all in German!

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Kalk Stickstoff = lime nitrogen

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

thanks Ludger. so is that lime mixed with a high nitrogen fertilizer?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Its burning, kell for about four weeks. And high explosive too LOL! Our grandfathers helped themselves with it to desinfect the soil with it, before chemical were known (and already forbidden again). Cabbage and other veggies prone to nematodes dont have much chance against Kalkstickstoff.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Monika an other name is Branntkalk or?

So it really is "lime ticking off" as in like a bomb ticking!!! LOL

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

ms kell, please don't use that word!!! the feds will be here looking at us!!!! LOLOLOLOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Arlene................. looking under all the brugs no doubt!!

Gosh, this doesn't sound like a fun thing to get rid of. Hope you figure out an easy way to banish them from your ground. Didn't someone mention one time that Gardens Alive had something that could get rid of them? Some kind of insect or whatever they are called. I just tossed me last catalog from them.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Beneficial Sf Nematodes is what Garden's Alive suggests for root knot nematode problems. However, it take 10 million of them to treat 300-400 square foot and that would cost 40 bucks plus postage. Pretty expensive.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

cheaper than trying to replace everything...in the long run

and not have to worry about it for a while.....

But CC, have you seen the size of Arlene's yard? If they just existed in the area around the plants, it wouldn't be so hard to deal with though, but I don't know what the little critter do as far as how far they roam. Maybe you could rent her some of your chickens and they could just scratch and pick them out. :-)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Yeah! I like that idea.....

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Is what Monika talking about something like calcium nitrate? It's exploxive, also a fertilizer. We can buy the fungus that kills nematodes, I'll check with our supplier and see how expensive it is.
