Cuttings of seedlings for Priority postage
Cala, someone in here said they cut theirs that had blossoms soon to open on them, and put them in a bucket of water in order to prolong them until they could bloom.
Wish I had thought of doing that with a few of mine that only needed another week to show their colors:) Hindsight is great I guess:)
Owen
Yes Owen, Hindsight is much better than foresight!!
I threw all my brug seedlings, that hadn't bloomed yet into those big plastic tubs, dumped a bunch of pro mix on the roots, watered ,and let them recover in the GH.
No ,they don't look great but some came through the rough treatment really well
Some have bloomed and since I wasn't impressed with them,I yank them out and chop them up.
Makes more room for the others, don't go broke on soil, and saves on space.
Hopefully by spring most of them will have bloomed and been culled........
Probably end up with one in each barrel.....
CC, I took some cuttings and just stuck a bunch in a pot. They are rooted now. I'm out of room for even that now!!
Calalily Anything you want to send this way--I will lovingly make room for. I 'm getting ready to add 3+ acres to the 12+ acres I already have---so I'll have the room.
amazing how 31° wind chill can make the decisions about what to save so much easier!
I'd like some of them! As many as you'd like to send...I was hoping to plant a whole row of them next year in the garden area! (All ya'lls fault, ya know!)
CC, good idea. wish i had some of those huge tubs. down here, we can jut throw a blanket over during the freezes on these. freddie has 800 baby cassias started in one of those huge tubs!
yes, the cold changes things. i cut back a whiskers, started it to root, and dug up the plant with blooms, gotta get back out and get it in a pot. after seeing Monika's plants that are protected, i'm gonna have some big mamas next year! CC, so glad you have your greenhouse.
So am I,I keep wondering where I put them all the last few years, course,I didn't have as many,or as big......
OK, guess I'll just whack the tops out of them all!! Yes, the cold can make decisions for you sometimes!! I've got all my special babies inside, they've been in since the first threat of frost. It's also amazing how much room one can keep finding. Like on the tops of pots, under hanging baskets(hope some of those dormant plants don't need much light) and I keep scooting the plants closer and closer.
Cala- I'd love to get some if you have any left. Thanks, Kristi
So CC......tell me again how you did this please? You took the seedlings from little cell packs?? and put them in a big bucket?? how big?? and they grow big enough that they will bloom all together in a bucket? how close are they in the bucket? I would love a way to grow lots of seedlings in a small area. thanks CC
No,these were the BIG suckers, that are 3-8 foot tall,I just dug them up,roots got washed with the hose, stuffed as many as I could in those 25 gallon plastic barrels, dumped in as much potting soil as needed to cover the roots.....water,remove droopy leaves, mist daily
ms kell, you can stick them a few inches apart, if cuttings. i have i think 14-15 in a 7 gallon bucket for example. they will be easy to separate once they get rooted. i would never take the time to put a seed in a cell packet..... throw a bunch in some kind of wide pot, a long thin window one, or fat hanging basket.
in case i didn't tell you, i rooted culebra last winter, never moved the pots, put a flannel shirt over them when it was supposed to freeze. they rooted like champs, never got hurt a bit. the coldest was a couple of nights 26, below freezing over 12 hours.
thanks CC and Arlene........... I am going to be less delicate in the treatment of my brugs!!! LOL tough love! I have so many cuttings rooting, I have them under eaves on my back porch. I think I will just leave them there and cover them with that frost cloth I bought. though I will just die if they die on me!!!
ms kell, if they die we will take up a collection of our best pinks for you.................
I have some rooted frosty's for ya!LOL
LOL CC..... won't I be surprised if that is what I have there growing.......all frosties!!!
I know you would Arlene, you are a sweetheart!!
cala if youstill have some let me know-i would take them!
I took a bunch last night. I'll share them with everyone!! Things are popcicles this morning. Kell, I stick cuttings in a pot, lots and lots of them in one pot, as long as they don't touch. I learned it from Glory.
how much do you figure postage will be-i will get that right out-you sweety!
dont you hate cold weather!!!
NM, it's around $3.95 for up to 2# I think. Guess I should get out those scales and weigh them into 2# bundles.
If you still have left let me know so I did mailed it out $3.95 have not got cutting still waiting. Please let me know if you got mine yet?
RR, you sent me 2 stamps for some seeds, that's all I've gotten and I sent your seeds.
Thank you so much... that mean you have not recieve from me yet so let me know when it arrive ok =) If not got within a week so let me know by email so I will send you another one, Thanks~
Yes I do have your seeds... thanks so much.
Oh taught myself that I did send cash wish do money order oh well I was in a hurry to send it off the reason why you have not gotten from me, it is my fault. Oh well it is ok next time I will do make out the money order. Forgive me Cala?
RR, when did you send it?
Cala- Redrose sounds familiar--"who, what, when, why and how" -- Cala I'm mailing out postage for cutting today.
Meri Lynn
Hmmm...I'm confused. So you have enuff to send to anyone, Cala? Like I said above I'd like some but I can wait to see if there are any leftover if others want them first. Besides, who knows, if possible I would take more than two pounds worth if there are that many leftover. Also, it looked like you were just guessing at the 2# postage...what if it's more than $3.95? I don't want you covering the difference if it is more.
Cala - it's changed now so the flat rate only covers up to 1 pound. Anything over 1 pound goes by zones and the costs can vary. It's a real pain in the butt to caculate!
Thanks Poppysue, guess they will get a pound. Yes Shoe, I have a big bundle of them that I brought in(froze my little fingers while getting them in) and have one big one with a Y that I'm saving for you!! I sent a couple of people big boxes earlier this fall, it was $10 for one and $20 for the other in postage!!
Cala I sent you 10 today. I guess I'll send you another 10 tommorrow--for the Grande box!
Desert-rose, are you the one with 12 acres to fill?? Hope you have a bunch of pots to put these in to root!!
Oh Cala, I just wish I wasn't so out of room! I keep inventing new spaces to put cuttings and plants now. There's even a bucket of cuttings in the bathtub now! :) Hope you find great homes for all your cuttings. Maybe I can hit you up next year for some of your spares.
So cool!....Just let me know what you wanna send me...I'll take em!
By the way, I checked the postal site...2 pounds from your place to zones 1, 2, and 3 is still 3.95 Zones 4 and up the price goes up. Hope that helps some.
Thanks Shoe.
Gnomey-- What a great idea! --- I have a whirlpool tub. I should be able to fill that up. Let me count sinks, unused toilets...can anyone think of anywhere else. Yes Cala--- I'm the one with 12 acres and getting ready to buy 3+ more next door. Trying to keep urban sprall out.
OK, don't buy up all of Texas till I get there and get my part!!
Now I have land envy again!!!
