These are from my un-known white suave-ish. The brugs are in the basement going dormant. I thought they'd hang onto the pods okay? These ones are a quarter of the size that the biggies are. The big ones seem to be hanging on for now. These puny ones are porbably no good - maybe the biggest one I opened will be okay ... but they definitely aren't mature. I'm not real concerned about these seeds because I didn't think the babies would be anything wonderful. However - I am concerned about anything wonderful I might get in the future. I don't want all of them to drop. What's wrong?
Pods are dropping
Poppysue, I've had some that I brought into the Jungle House do this too. It's funny, the big pods are hanging on with no problem, this smaller size I find a few each day, but the new ones I've pollinated since they've been inside are doing fine. Kind of weird.
Poppy,
this seedpods has been to small ( unripe ) when autumn is coming. Have seen you are in 5a. Iīm in 7b and somtimes my pods are to small for riping in winterquartier.
GL
Here they are all opened up. Thought the difference in seeds was sorta of interesting. The little one on the right was crossed to Isabella. It's no bigger than a large gumdrop - but look how big the seeds are compared to the other two. It only had 6 or 8 seeds but they're big. The middle one has the smallest seeds.
Poppy sorry again
all seedpods are just unripe.
GL
Poppy sow this seeds at once, may be some will germinate.
I donīt believe it but may be.
Next year do not open all pods, smile. Bring the Brugs in house and wait for some weeks. Sometimes the large pods will become ripe.
GL
Yes, sow those seeds. I accidentaly(well, I admit I did it, couldnt' keep my hands off)picked some pods last year and sowed the white seeds. Lots of them came up, sometimes better than the ones that I let ripen all the way. Those Isabella seeds look ripe enough too, heck, sow them all!!
I believe they need a little light to keep them going so the pods will mature. After that, the light might not be needed. Not absolutely sure about this though.
Ludger - I only opened these because they fell off. I don't know as I really want to plant them anyhow. Next year I want to make sure some of them will mature. Most of my blooms came late in the season - and most of the ones I pollinated didn't really develop before they fell off.
I wonder - if you limit the amount of pods on a plant... will they mature faster? Maybe only leave 2 or 3 choice crosses on a plant?
How come I'm the one that has to learn all this stuff the hard way? All you brug newbies out there - just keep track of poppysue! She makes all the mistakes first!!
I lost my last ones too. They were six weeks or more old, but when I put them in the garage, they dropped after about three weeks. No light in there. The ones I took to the basement, cool, but with light, stayed on. Go figure.
I lost all the smaller ones. every one on Butterfly came off. the ones on Cherie Amour and Pink Beauty have stayed, they are much older and bigger.
I too lost lots of the smaller pods. Mine are in a greenhouse, lots of light, so I don't think light is the whole problem.
Hummm - most of mine are staying on!!! I have some pretty big ones, it is true it's ok to pick them when the calyx turns yellow, or should the pod turn yellow too?? Most of the calyx are still green, but I have moved them into my new "Temp Brug house" so they still get plenty of light. Some are on some branches I air layered and have now cut off, hope they keep growing.
Most of them are nautral mysteries, but I do have a few that I pollinated, I'm really thrilled that I may actually have an original. Haven't said much about them, wanted to see if it was really going to work!
oh dear, I was going to move all my brugs into my hoop house this weekend. we finally got the clips. the temp here today was in the 70's so maybe I should wait. now that I promised those seeds it would kill me if they fall off.
About the pod.. I have one pod on my Jessie Noel.. It still hanging there and it is over 3 months old.. I moved it into temporary greenhouse and been check onthat daily to make sure it doesnt fall. Tomorrow night and sunday it will be middle 30's.. SO cold for brugs!!!!!!I moved all my brugs and cuttings into green house.. Myabe I should bring brug with pod indoor in case to save the pod to stay on brug..:)
I have had a lot of smaller pods dry up and drop too this year.Any other year I wouldn't lose any..but when you WANT the pods..they drop!! LOL Go figure!
Eclipse, I think that's it!!! They know we want them and are just taunting us!! I didn't lose any pods last year either, but only had the real toughies(as in tough plants, fertile myrtle) like Dr Seuss, FP and Isabella.
Cala, I remember a pod that I found on one of the cuttings you sent me, :-) I don't think they were totally mature but I planted them anyway just to see if they were germanate (sp?). Take a look at what came up from that one pod, LOL! These are from the seeds from the Isabella cutting that had the pod on it.
Those look great!! I remember that cutting with the pod on it. I wasn't sure if it would develop or not.
I was under the impression that the seeds needed to turn brown before they were mature enought to grow - I threw away some that were white in a pod I got on a plant from Arlene last summer - it had lots but only 13 brown ones, I guess what you don't know CAN hurt you!!
I thought I should let you all know that I'm getting some germination from these unripe, under-developed seeds! The seedlings sure are tiny. I planted them fresh from the pods (Nov 14th) and have had some up for a week or so now.
If you have some special pods that fall off it's worth the effort to plant them no matter how -unripe they look. I never thought these would really germinate. Even the gumdrop sized Isabella is coming up.
Way to go Sue. I can't believe that little Isabella pod had seed that would mature. Must be a record and I'll sure keep that in mind the next time I lose a good one. I'm thinking now that I might have been able to have something really special had I gone ahead and opened those pods and tried to grow the seeds out. Oh well. Next year.
How wonderful and what great news for us in the colder climates! I'm glad you planted them. Now I have hope for some of mine next season.
Kristi
Maybe some of the experienced growers wouldn't agree ... but they sorta remind me of tomatoes. You know how you can pick a green tomato and it will ripen on the countertop after it was picked?? No matter how small the tomato is. They remind me of that... I wonder if it's just a survival technique.
Way to go Poppysue, Im happy for you, and look forward to seeing the plants developed from your seeds...
This gives me hope with my Shredded White x Butterfly pods. The penducle turned yellow and the two little pods started to wrinkle up so I picked them before they rotted.I cut a small slit and peeked inside and the seeds are white. I have them sitting on a shelf in my livingroom. After reading this I will plant them tomorrow and hope for the best. Thanks Poppy.
Thats great news,I hope you end up with something special!
