coriander for spider mites?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I came across this remedy for spider mites, here is the site

http://www.renaissanceherbs.com.au/Herbal_Sprays.htm

Coriander (Cilantro) FOR spider mites and aphids

1 part Coriander plant
equal part water
Boil Coriander and water for 10 minutes.
Strain and spray.

Has anyone tried coriander for a treatment of spider mites?
I wonder how it would work with the powdered coriander with water? I dont think I could avoid equal parts though....wouldnt tht be a cup of coriander to a cup of water???

isn't coriander the same plant as cilantro? or am I really losing my mind???

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

it is Tig, when it's still a plant it is cilantro, but when it is the seeds...it's coriander...funny huh? I just bought a ton of coriander powder, then looked it up cause I thought I had bought the wrong spice, and learned a lot in the process....
Just for your Info....it is used in many middle eastern dishes, meats etc., but also in desserts. funny huh?

I'm going to give this a try - I always have left over cilantro after making salsa. Would be great if it works!!!

Pebble when you use dry herbs instead of fresh - you use a lot less. I think it's 1 of Tbsp of dry = 1 cup of fresh.

Poppysue; It's 1 tab. dried herb, equals 3 tab. fresh herbs. A 3 to 1 ratio.

O - thanks Deb. Glad you corrected me!

Pebble, if u are to use coriander for cooking. u are better off to buy the seeds. dry pan fry it [ take an iron skillet, heat it pan till hot, add the coriander seed. keep stirring till aroma permeates the air]. dry pan frying coriander seed, then grinding it urself, makes a lot of difference in cooking.

i doubt very much if u can achieve the same result in using powdered coriander for the purpose of getting rid of the spider mite. powdered spices loses their pungency within 3 months. besides, u never know how long those have been sitting in the store. using fresh herb is so much different from using powdered ones.

i Never buy powdered spices or herbs. i always buy the seeds and grind my own as i need to use them.

also try dry pan frying black pepper corns. u will be surprise of the difference in fragrance and flavor when it comes to cooking.

dry pan frying of herb or spices is one of the great secrets of successful chefs.

u can also test the difference in flavor of dry pan frying or heating up dried oregano leaves prior to using in any recipe. makes a great difference! just my 2 cents worth.

My aunt uses catnip the same way for an insect repellant. She puts a cup of catnip in 4 cups of water, simmers till reduced by half, cool, strain and then spray the plants. Works to keep mosquitoes off humans too.
edited to change the amount of water, I had it wrong.

Thanks for the info, :-) Does anyone own a sider mite wand? My BIL gave me one for my roses and it works great with just water, :-) Attached to the end of the garden hose and you just spray the plants (under the leaves where the spider mites live) and it washes them off without any plant damage. I have used the wand for a couple of years on my roses and it works great! It's made of PVC pipe and a couple of fittings. I can post a picture if you like, :-)

Mavie, thanks for the tip. I did buy seeds of the coriander also, I will try what you say. also with the peppercorns.

I do have a dilemma...the other day I bought 3 spices in a middle eastern store. they had no way to identify the bags...the coriander seeds...no problem identifying them, they are seeds... but then I also bought gound allspice and ground coriander, I cant tell the difference.. I have tried smelling them, they both smell really good. I tried comparing the smell with the seeds..I couldnt do it...now ... how to tell what's what? and I wonder if the two spices are interchangeable???

Here is a great link to identify, etc. many, many spices. Both coriander and allspice are on this page.

brugie...wow - what a wealth of information. I enjoyed reading about different spices.

Cala, I like the catnip idea too. But egads...wouldnt it drive the cats insane? would they think we were teasing them?
