Can anyone tell me what's causing these spots on my brugs? New growth looks okay for a while then starts to spot as well. The plants seem healthy and are blooming. If it's a transient bug that's okay, if not...
Thanks for any ideas
What are these spots??
oh, my, i hope i didn't pass that on to you. everyone who has come here i think said they had these too. i decided it is leaf spot. i used ortho rose spray, 3 in 1 or something on some brugs and it seemed to help. they say to pull off the affected leaves and put in the trash. i haven't been able to pick them fast enough and some are too tall for me to reach. i don't remember having it before, but got a case of it this year!!! did the JYS open white? gotta email you!
Arlene, I have this on some of my brugs in the basement. What causes it? Is it a bug or something or a fungus? Maybe I better get some kind of spray on it. Will wait for some suggestions.
Hi Arlene! JYS hasn't opened completely yet. They just 'popped' yesterday. As far as these spots...should I just pick off all the affected leaves? They'll look a little funny but if that will stop the spread, no problem.
Jean Pasco is in full bloom and guess what?? The Candida is dropping her skirts!! Several of the new blooms are fully double and more buds yet to open
I check all mine almost every day, one brug has just started "spotting", also, leaves were dropping. Has been in the same place for over 3 weeks. Looked real close while spraying with my dishwashing liquid/water, a tiny ,tiny bug was going around to the other side of the leaf. Every once in awhile I see a tiny bug almost like a gnat flying. Hope this helps!

Good idea Hibiscus, I think I'll use the soap spray before I pick off the leaves. We've looked and looked for insects, etc, but have seen nothing. Guess I'd better stop tossing those leaves on the ground too!
Hibiscus, i long thought it was bug damage, and maybe some of it is, but i think it might be a fungi. found it in my florida gardening book, then in the presseil book. Have you ever used murphy's oil soap instead of dish soap?
Floridian, now that is a pretty pic! i'm so glad it's doing well for you.
So Arlene...what does the book say to do if this is a fungus? I use a mix of milk, water and baby shampoo, works great on aphids!
the brug book doesn't really say. my florida gardener says to use a fungicide asap, and pick and destroy leaves. i think cala recommended daconil. i used to have a recipe that used dog shampoo with pyrethium in it, lost it. love those organic recipes.
Have never tried Murphy oil soap, as dishwashing liquid usually cures most minor problems unless they get way out of hand. Thanks, will keep it in mind.
These spots on leaves look like the mite and flea beattle damage we had this summer.
hibiscus, i hope you are right. the biggest clue when i read about leaf spot was it starting at the bottom leaves and moving up. it has gotten on some calyces, and they don't dry and fall off, they turn to mush. it is disgusting. then again it's hrd to tell from pics if floridan has what mine have. it seems like you'd have to treat the soil if that is what it is. i'm not very good at insects and diseases.
Safer's also has a fungicidal soap, easy to find, and safe to use. Those spots look incredibly close to a brug of mine that has spray damage, from spraying miticide. By any chance have you sprayed any chemicals including your soap mix, in the sun? Or without measurments? I have done similar damage with plain dishwashing soap overdose.
I'll get some of the Safer's fungicide. I've only used my spray on a couple of milkweed and a hoya so it's not that. It does/did start on the lower leaves and has worked it's way up...the leaves yellow and I'm constantly picking them off. So far it's only on three brugs in the same area. Shopping tomorrow!
My brugs leaves have the spots.. I keep pulling the spots leaves and throw it away. I guess I will need to spray them.. Hope it will help..
Go get some fungicide with chlorothalonil/Daconil as the active ingredient. Tea tree oil, neem and also baking soda have anti-fungal properties and would be worth a try for those not wanting to use chemicals. Don't mix the tea tree oil too strong, just about ¼ teaspoon per gallon. BE SURE to disinfect your clippers and hands after handling these infected leaves or you will spread the infection.
Susie, what is the reason for several of us having this on our brugs this year? Mine are just now beginning with it and I'm going to try my best to get it stopped in it's tracks.
Fungi are all around us. They usually only attack a plant if it's in a weakened state, like chilled or injured. I'd say it's the cooler temps and having to move them inside where air movement isn't as good as it was outside.
Maybe I should put a small fan in the basement to move the air a bit. Think that would help along with the spray? It isn't all that warm down there. Probably runs around 60 degrees.
I had to put a fan in my greenroom, it was so humid it was stuffy and yuck! I knew if I didn't like it, they wouldn't.
Let me do a little research, each fungus has a specific range of temperatures it's happy in. If you go above or below that range, it can't multiply so fast.
I'll be waiting. Thanks.
Cercosporea leaf spot:
Begins on older leaves
Progresses to younger leaves
Symptoms may occur in as few as five days after infection (10 - 14 day infection cycle)
Circular spots about 1/8 inch in diameter with ash gray centers
Dark brown to reddish purple brown borders
Gray centers will have tiny black dots or a fuzzy blue-gray appearance
In severe cases, spots may grow together to kill entire leaf
Under ideal conditions, more spores are produced every 5 days
Spores spread by wind, water, and insects
Thrives in temperatures between 68° to 79° F, greatest at 75° to 79° F
Thrives in a relative humidity between 90 & 100%, greatest at 100% for 8.5 hours
Spores will not form in temperatures below 50° F
Daytime temperatures of 80° to 90° and nighttime temperatures above 60° favor disease development
I copied this information from syngenta website. There were several outbreaks of this in pansies this year. We used a preventative drench of Subdue Maxx and didn't have a problem.
Guess the fan wouldn't be a good idea right now. I'm going to spray with something different next time. I used Physan 20 this time. It said it could be used for leaf spot, so thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. Might water with it once too to make sure I have got it all. Thanks Cala. Just dug out the Daconil for the next spray.
I sprayed my entire brug population with a spray for mites today to ready them for the hoop house. After at least 45 minutes of spraying, all done......then I realized the liquid had not gone down at all in the bottle of insecticide!!!
ms kell, that would be something i would do! are you close to frost?
I do not know. How can I tell? LOL. Do I sound like a blonde again, Arlene? I mean, besides the weather report, is there a place that estimates the first frost date that is coming in this year???
kell, go here. http://www.victoryseeds.com/frost/ca.html
Kell, I did exactly the same thing!!! I sprayed for hours, a whole 30X96 house crammed full of plants, then discovered that the liquid hadn't gone down at all.(yes, I admit being a blonde) I had mixed powder with water and it was too course to go thru the little siphon thingie in the sprayer. Clean out your sprayer and try again is all I can suggest.
ms kell, my favorite people are often blonde! i am blonde at heart, and 120 pounds and 19. my first frost date is 11/5!!!
Arlene, I like your way of thinking!!
LOL Arlene, we must be twins..........
so where did you find when your frost date was and was it???
Cala, it was one of those bottles you buy that comes with a sprayer end that you just hook up to your hose........... no thinking involved............... well evidently some thinking must have been needed!! LOL
Kell, that's the same kind I had, supposed to be safe for blondes to use, but alas it wasn't fool proof!!
i hope my worked yesterday! didn't know it was that kind. WM had their schulz stuff in those bottles for 2.00 each. i figured 5-30-5 would be good for winter, don't you think?
ms kell, i'm sure we were separated at birth......lol
Here's hoping it worked Arlene, you aren't blonde are you?(poor Kell should have been blonde, I think she dyes her hair)
cala, while i still had untreated hair i was called a strawberry blonde....... red headed and freckle faced.....
Oh Arlene, I knew I liked you!!! Welcome to our little blonde group!!!
lololol
we are all just a big happy blonde family.....so ...we have an excuse......LOL
And we use it when we need to!!
i tell you, playing dumb is an art, a pure art form, and works so well. sometimes it works so well, people give you want you want just to get rid of you (at least me), and i have done the same for those blonder than me.
