Has anyone heard of or produced variegated offspring from variegated parent brugs? I have a really neat original variegation from a sport, Brugcrazy has sent photos in of it. It is slow growing, and it would be nice to breed that out of it. But I don't think it's possible, just checking. It is quite different from any other variegation so its slow growth rate still allows it worthiness in a collection I feel. On a different topic, is there an amount of time that must pass before it can be named and distributed? And for naming, aside from an original name, are there rules, or a page of where to find these things out? I will continue growing this all winter and next year hope to give it out.
Thanks, Dennis
variegation passing to seeds?
Dennis, I think Monika said that the variegation is not passed on thru seeds.
Dennis, the hybridizers like Monika and others i have heard of i believe advocate growing for 2 years to totally evaluate it. i don't know if her shorter growing time makes the time longer. around here, people name them often with the second flush of flowers.
i thought monika told me the variegation could possibly be passed along but would be unlikely to grow with lack of cholorophyl, then again i could be confused again. good luck with the sport, those are pretty rare.
Thanks both of you. I have heard both, that they don't pass it to seed, and that the seedlings are albino. Today I will, after more than two years, ID her. I will probably send photos in tonight for help from you all, just so I get it right. The mother of the sport is flowering, though in awful condition, but I think the flowers are ok.
Dennis, looking forward to the pics!!!! what color flowers?
White flowers, yellow, green, cream, white leaves.
OOOOO........love to see that!!

Sounds really nice Dennis! I'd love to obtain a cutting from you in the future!

Me too - the one that blew off the roof of your car when you drove away didn't make it. LOL
I bet that is something to see! can't wait, post quick :-)
Brugcrazy, it's looking good, how recent is that pic? Liz, I promise you, you get the first thing I root. I have a few that have been rooting for almost a month, with callus, and one in water like you showed me the other day.
I find the brighter the light the less green it produces (common with variegates), so part sun is best. I think I mentioned I figure I'll call it Kaya after my dog, if it keeps from reverting.
I find it roots pretty slow too. It is kind of a severe variegation. Unlike p+c which isn't even really effected. I'll figure out a trick to pump it to size.
My dad has it's mother plant at his office where he doesn't fert it, and took a couple photos of some half dead flowers for me, so I'll try to post them on Dave's tonight in hopes someone can give me a positive ID. I thought it was suaveolens, but that was awhile back, probably hybrid by the mothers growth rate!
Very nice variegation though...hope they can be produced. :-)
Thanks! I ID'd it tonight using the Saunders ID chart, and it is definately B. suaveolens, with a white flower.

Brugcrazy, I see lots of little side shoots that would make great cuttings. Slice them off, dip in liquid root hormone, stick in vermiculite and use one of those "mini-greenhouses" made out of a gallon size jug. Lots of times the little side shoots will grow faster.
