Greetings Fellow Gardeners

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

I have been wandering and posting around on this site for about two weeks now (having FINALLY paid my dues), and think it's time to say hello to everyone in general.

Who am I? ...a 50~year~old (next month), former Wall Street lawyer~banker type guy, born in a Bronx ghetto. Pretty much grew up in Yankee Stadium. Lived in Switzerland, Italy and New Zealand (where 12.5 years ago I met my wife ~~~ she's German, a scientist), since 1993 back in NYC, and live again where I was born, in the Bronx (but not quite the same neighborhood).

I've "inherited" cultivation of a community garden (about 2,000 square feet), from a dear man who managed it for 37 years. It's in just terrible shape and I don't know a lot. My wife has done soil testing. About half the area (from which I am removing construction debris ~~~ the building the garden abutts was repaired), has a cation exchange capacity of 8.5, which means it has the same fertility as beach sand. The rest seems to support the simpler forms of life.

For four months I have tilled and sweated and ammended, and have just finished the first autumn plantings. Spring will be my judge.

Aside from that, I know a bit about food, cooking, cuisine (we are serving 27 for Thanksgiving dinner). I have a wood shop, where I build Japanese~style furniture without power tools. The rest of my waking hours I spend thinking about Yankee baseball. I hope no one finds my baseball passion too provokative ~~~ let's not force Dave to delete this thread ;~).

Adam.

Welcome, Aotearoa/Adam! Community gardens are wonderful, and I think it's great that you are restoring the one whose management has passed to you. Happy Thanksgiving in advance, that dinner you're planning sounds like a real feast.

Howdy Adam...(that sure is easier to spell/pronounce than Aotearoa) (What's that name mean, by the way?)

You sound like you have your work cut out for you. That garden will be in good shape in no time, you'll see!

Food? Cooking? Cuisine? Hmmmm...don't forget to check out the Recipe Forum then! K?

Welcome Adam from some other Yankee fans! :)

Well - - I am a mild fan - - but my husband is a big fan. We used to live in the Bronx too up until a year and 4 months ago - - Riverdale, Skyview.

Thanks for all the great cooking tips on the recipes thread.

I am sure your community garden will look great in no time --- and how wonderful for everyone in your community to have a quiet place of beauty, right out their back door.

Welcome Adam..from Ontario Canada

So if you are a "former" wall streetbanker guy..does that mean you are retired now?
You must have a deep love of New Zealand to have used the Maori name Aotearoa.
Cheers,

Such dear people...

I never imagined when I found this site that I had wandered into such a warm, welcoming community of people who love all things plant~like. Thank you all so much for your welcoming messages (I have even gotten emails from folks who did not post here).

Yes, I am a "former" Wall Street guy, "the Street" being the generic term for the craft I practised for a couple of decades in a few different place. Retired? Well..., my days seem pretty full. Ley's just say I am cultivating other opportunities ;~) Hopefully in the spring and summer I'll have some pretty photos to share with you all.

My screen name: Yes, my wife and I have a profound love of New Zealand. We met there, and have literally 100 friends on those blessed islands. Karen and I met climbing a mountian, a real one, each solo, each reaching the summit simultaneously from opposite sides. There was a full moon that night, and shooting stars. If you saw it in a movie or read it in a book you'd say, "No way." But it's true. We began our life together there, that day. Nearly 13 years later, I thank God every day for bringing this angel into my life. So, yeah, I sort of have fond memories of New Zealand.

And now I'm glad for having stumbled into the garden Dave started. How lovely to meet you all.
