Looking for fast growing cold hardy vine

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

We have a patio in Whistler, a town in mountains, snow 5 months of the year, cold nights most of the year too. Zone 3 or 4. I have tried Hops(best so far), Clematis montana (still waiting to see what happens after winter), Polygonum aubertii (declines yearly), and one pink variegated leaved grape looking vine, latin starts with an A, drew a bank. The hops is good except it leafs out too late. We need privacy as early as possible. It must also grow about 10 feet from the ground to cover the patio. ANyone know of something I should try? Much appreciated if you do!
Thanks, Dennis

silver lace vine comes to mind here. I planted one two years ago at my mothers place and it got almost 40 feet along the fence this year and up into a tree and covered the grapevines too. One vine is all it took. Pretty small white flowers in mid to later summer and they last and last too. Early to spring fourth with growth here in zone 6. This was with limited irrigation too. It can be trimmed to keep it under control also if desired. Lani

Lani thanks, Polygonum is silver lace. I have planted 4-5 now, one did moderately well, the rest are just shrinking and at least one died. I did have a similar experience as you with it when I planted it in Vancouver, where it grew 15 feet eah way from the trellis, and it was in a 5 gal pot!!!!

How about a Trumpet Vine? Thay grow several feet each year, don't die back to the root(at least not here),etc. so getting one to 10 feet or higher is really easy. They spread from underground runners so they'll soon cover a large area on a fence or trellis.

I did plant one a few years back, I don't think they can deal with the cold, I will check the books again though. Seems it needed hot temps for flower production, of course I need leaves and flowers can be dealt with after privacy is. Another I tried was Ipomoea (several kinds), they couldn't take the chills!
Thanks, Dennis

Bittersweet & Virginia creeper are fast growers... Maybe even too fast :)

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Trumpet creeper takes zone 6 weather really well. I also have Virginia creeper that covers a fence very well.

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Bittersweet sounds good. Too fast? Not possible. The Boston Ivy/Virginia creapers are great too, and for fall colour!
Thanks for your help everyone.

Have you thought of wisteria if you are no looking for winter leaves? It is an early spring grower and has the best flowers.

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Hi Kell, Sorry I didn't mention I have slatted trellises. Two things about wisteria, it seems to leaf out fairly late, or at least later than hops, and size. I think 9/10 wisterias planted are probably in the wrong spot, most gardens don't have the proper support for long term. I always see them on wooden trellis's, on a wire (LOL) and along peoples eves. They could take your roof off! It would be fast though.

If you want some virginia creeper to try, I have some I could send you for postage.

Thanks so much Ponditis, but our border guards are creaps when it comes to plants! It's probably worth it to hit the local shop for it. Or maybe I'll snip a start from an unsuspecting customer of mine LOL. Thanks anyhow.

LOL I forgot that you were in Vancouver BC and not Vancouver WA. LOL Blond moment here! I do have seeds or are they contraband too? Lani

what about honeysuckle- it smells so good.

Hey, Dennis... why haven't you changed your city and zone info. on your member page? In reading this post, I was a tiny bit confused as to where you really are, then realized you must have moved.

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Darius, It's too long and confusing to explain why, I'm in transition I guess. I grow a lot of plants here in 8a, and so far just a few in 4.
I'll change it when I officially move.

Dennis... sounds like a natural thing to be doing, as you are in 2 places, not just one. Good luck on your move.

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

What Dennis hasn't mentioned is that the best skiing in North America is at Whistler ;~)

How about some of that new plastic lattice that has the holes closer together. Here they are calling it "privacy lattice". That way you would have your privacy pretty well taken care of and the vines could come along later when people are getting out and around for the summer. Or glass block? A board fence? :) Trying here.
