Has anyone done this, or heard of it being done in the industry? In the horticulture apprenticeship (govenment funded to spike the industry with educated workers)we learned of it being done, usually on vegetatively cloned crops that weren't possible from seed. This was several years ago (1999). The plant was forced in ideal growing conditions, fertilized high N for rapid growth, and the growing tip was taken, free of virus. Whether this works for all virus I don't know, but the Brugmansia can grow extremely rapid. My guess is this was done in a growth chamber for ideal environment. I guess I will have to find my notes on this won't I. I am interested to hear if anyone has done this. This could change everything for the better for all of us.

Outgrowing a virus?
Yes, I went to a class here at the university and that's how they do for tissue culturing a plant with a virus. They force it to grow very fast @110*F-high Nitrogen, low light. They then take the meristem, disinfect the cutting and culture in a sterile environment. You will then have a virus free plant as long as it's not contaminated.
Calla- Although we did do tissue culture there (basics) I think this may have been seperate from that lab- did they mention if you could take cuttings from that plant and have a possile virus free clone?
Thanks for replying- Dennis
Dennis,no, only the meristem is what was mentioned, but I think one of our grower magazines mentioned what you are talking about. The Fisher line of geraniums had a virus several years ago. There was an article about how they propigated virus free stock.
I was beginning to think I heard wrong but with that, I'm sure it is possible. Anyone have a growth chamber?LOL.
Sorry, only when you take a meristem it will work.
Not with strong growing plants.
A cutting from this plant will have the virus again.
You must use a labour and take some virusfree cells. From this virusfree cells the meristem will grow ( in warm water, steril and with special food...like in an aquarium).
Would like to be able this method in private rooms or GH´s.
Would have virusfree sanguineas, gelber Engels and so on, sorry again.

Years ago w have had this virusproblems with geraniums....
only meristems with virusfree cells could save the plants
Ludger, here is a good link. http://www.une.edu.au/~agronomy/AgSSrHortTCinfo.html
I have had a short look at your link Cala. May be, I´ll believe it if I have read it better.
sorry am a bad man, don´t trust all things at once.
Guess its my english...never have heard that you can get a virusfree cutting from a plant. Would be to easy....
Greetings Ludger
Ludger, there are diagrams to tell you how to do the meristem cuttings.
Just try it.
