I want to get some yellow daffodil bulbs for my father (it's the only color he really likes), but not sure that Lowe's quality is what it ought to be. Any thoughts on Lowe's or buying daff bulbs in general? Any suggestions?
Yellow daffs
I love daffodils also. I have some that my mother had over 40 years ago. But I plant them randomly, so I don't really know which ones are yellow at this time of year. When I buy bulbs, I go to a nursery rather than to Lowes or Walmart or places like that. Nurseries have such nice bulbs and you can go through the bin and pick out the biggest ones. I have always had good luck with bulbs from a nursery and they aren't really that much more expensive.
Thanks. I had a feeling I'd get that response. :)
I can't comment on Lowes but as my parents would say, 'If in doubt, do nowt'.
I've picked up some good plants and bulbs from supermarkets, not all have been of the best quality but they've done the job.
Got mine from Lowes during a sidewalk sell. Bought the lot and every one came up beautiful.
Hmmmmm. Mixed feelings on this I can see. :) I'll see what else folks have to say before I go out shopping.
you need to get 'em in soon when you decide. I bought some last weekend and leaves were already growing out of the sheath that would normally be 6 inches underground. The sheath normally covers the leaves and bud until they reach the soil surface.
I got my daffs at Lowe's and they have bloomed for two springs now and were really nice the first year and even better the second and many more of them too. I would buy from them again.

Just make sure the bulbs are firm and healthy looking and have not started to grow. The larger the bulb the better it will flower. I buy mine where ever I see fat healthy bulbs at a good price. Sometimes HD and Lowes have great ones, sometimes not.
good luck
I agree with Kell. I never buy in packages where I can't examine the bulbs. I like to pick and choose. The larger the bulb, the larger the bloom usually. Never buy shriveled bulbs.

Hi Carla, Mark is right, daffodil time is just about ready to give way to tulip planting time... the sooner the better! Just pick out some nice ones, not rotted, soft or mushy, neither dried out and dessicated. PLump is good, and not started to grow... Your Dad will really appreciate you thoughtfulness in the spring. Hugs, John
