Too Much Rain!

Ace, TX(Zone 8a)

My brugs are laying over because the ground is so soggy and my daturas look like they are dying. All the leaves are wilted and will probably fall off. We had 9 to 11 (I lost count) straight days of rain. Then 2 dry days in the 80's and now rain again with temps in the 50-60's, maybe all week. The only one's that don't seem affected are my two variegated brugs. I was gonna build another green house, now I am undecided, greenhouse or ark......TEXAS WEATHER

cajunace.. I am with you.. Tired of raining.. Yes It did rained for 11 days then two beautiful day then now rain again for 2nd days. My brugs look fine, no wilt but one in ground, loook terrible from the bad storm last week.

I'd get my brugs out of the ground and let them dry out. they will rot if kept too wet.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

All my brugs are in the pots and one in ground...I can tell the different between pot and in ground.. In ground they look terrible.. I agree with tiG, dig them out before they rot.

The only problem with getting them out of the ground is that some are just too big for pots. One is almost 8ft. Some have been in the ground for a few years. The younger one's I planted this year seem to be handling it OK. I have sandy soil and if it ever stops raining it usually dries up pretty quick. It's just that the ground is saturated already and the rain has no place to go anymore.

Don't we know..........I took cuttings of mine last week, and lifted as much stuff as possible. Looking at a few blue streaks in the sky today..........much better for the soul!

Cajunace,
We have had lots of rain here as well. Are your brugs in raised beds? I thought I remembered from your pics that they are. Hopefully they'll dry up quickly and you won't loose any. They were beautiful. At least the rain is supposed to be over for a while.Let's keep our fingers crossed. Has anyone tryed to winter a brug standard like you winter a rose standard in colder climates(ie, chicken wire ring and leaves, burlap etc.)? I wonder if this would work for brugs in zone 8?

Luv2garden were almost within shoutin distance. LOL
I thank goodness this rain has finally left us at least for a few days.
No their not in raised beds. I have always had mine in the ground here with no trouble. I don't think I will loose any of the brugs, did a walk around today and only had to pack the soggy dirt back in around one.
I winter mine over here by cutting them back before the first frost (if you want to root cuttings) or just leaving them and cutting the dead back before spring. I mulch them heavily and haven't lost one in 4 years. I had my first seed pod last year in October, so I tried to cover durning frost until the seed pods were ready. Didn't work, they still got frost bit. So this year I am just gonna cut them back and mulch till spring arrives.
It's the datura's I fear won't survive. They have lost almost all their leaves and they were so pretty. This was my first year to grow them. Luckly I will have seeds to plant in the spring.

Cajunace,
I was told by the nursery where I purchased my Datura, that it would not winter over. I have saved seed from my double purple and will try those in the spring. I might try some cuttings if I get time before it freezes. This is my first year to garden in this area and can't believe how things grow here. I have gone plant crazy. Thanks for the tips on wintering the brugs. I only have 1 in the ground and was hoping it would come back next year. Since we're so close, maybe we can get together and do some plant trading sometime.

Your welcome. I would love to get together some time. You really should come out and see what all I have. It will amaze you at what will grow here. I try to keep things in my yard that will come back easily and not require allot of protection. E-mail me. I also go to a plant swap in Houston near Humble about twice a year and hope to start one up around here in the future.
