Autumn leaf colour can be (and usually is) amazing
we have just purchased a cotinus (pink smoke tree) and the leaves are green with a little pinkish color on them. I am so delighted to have found one of these trees, and look forward to discussing it with anyone who has had one for a while. I'm interested in any facts or advice you can give me about it.
Joey
Hi Joey, they're lovely plants and worthy of a prime spot as they have lovely leaf colour in spring and autumn, and when they flower in late summer, the foamy 'smoke' effect can be outstanding when they are in a place they enjoy.
they can be rather sprawly, but that adds to their charm
However they can also stand severe pruning in my experience
Philomel, what a marvelous photo!
I only had the purple smokebush so never had those gorgeous pink leaves!
Yes, I had the purple too, but this is one from my mum's garden in Kent :)
I think the green leaved ones are if anything more beautiful than the purple, though those rich leaves are lovely set against the right background
Wow...thought-provoking photo!
Thanks Connie. Funnily enough I have just bought this smoke bush and am about to plant it in my new garden in France. I think it will make a very good backdrop to the new pond I've made on a slope just outside the house.....
I have had a purple leaf smoke tree for several years. It was only a few inches tall when it was given to me.
I don't have a clue about how to prune or care for it. I noticed there are a couple of dead limbs in the top. Should this tree be pruned yearly? I hope so because I planted it without looking up and it is getting close to power lines.
I prune mine and it always grows back well.
