I know it's been a while since I have promised the triple purple, yellow and white datura seeds but I am still waiting for the pods to burst, it seems to be taking forever just like last year. I just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgot about you and will send as soon as they are ready along with an email to let you know that I have mailed them.
For all that I have promised seeds to....
don't feel bad Kit, i am in the same boat. this year's growing season is so weird. none of my datura pods have riped either. i wonder if they will ever ripen since the cold weather is upon us. yes, the desert is cold these days. last night low was 38*F. can u believe that? and i am in California!
It is so frustrating, that's why I hate to offer seeds from these plants because you just never know what is going to happen. Good luck with yours and let me know when yours open.
windsurffer any chance still left??
Ted, i will keep u in mind, when my seeds ripen. both Winsurfer and i are having the same problem. too many seed pods and flowers on all my datura plants todate, but i do not see anything ripening. if not mistaken we both have the same varieties with the exception of mauve/pink i have.
summertime of last year, i was harvesting seeds galore. this time nothing is ripening and the young pods keep dropping to the ground.
Thanks you are a jewel. ♫
not me Ted LOL! the country where i originally hailed from is known as the Pearl of the Orient --> Philippine Islands :). thanks for the compliment. i am merely a simple person who was taught to share whenever it is possible ;)!
Still think so. I have a sea shell collection from the Philippine's. Got them while I was in the Army.
I have the double purple, triple purple, triple white and triple yellow daturas. It is suppose to go down to 30 degrees tonight so I hope that they make it through. I checked on them today and still no pods open so please keep your fingers crossed for me.
Windsurffer: If you do get a freeze tonight, go ahead and pick the biggest pods tomorrow and bring them inside and cut them open so they can start drying, they are problably mature enough and will finish maturing inside while drying.
MaVie: I would love some of your Mauve-pink datura seeds. Please let me know if you get any seeds from them. You can do the same as above, if frost is expected in your area.
i surely will check tomorrow and keep u posted. hope u're right!
I dug my double purple and yellow up ,threw them in a pot ,and brought them in,and so far they are still alive.Figured it would be the only way the seeds would rippen.....
ok, i picked one big pod from the black currant swirl [triple purple to some]. i sliced it open, inside the pod is soggy and wet. i doubt very much if the seeds inside is matured enough. the outside of the seed pod greenish purple in color. i hate to be the bearer of bad news... it does not look like there will be a harvest of seeds from any of the datura i grow. tomorrow, not by choice, i will have to pick each seed pod, and see what i can salvage if ever there is any at all. what a bummer!!! all the hard work and no seeds to harvest this year.
last night temperature here was 32*F. tonight and the week ahead, the temperature will even go lower! in all the 5 yrs., i've lived here, this is the 1st coldest Oct./Nov. months here. this coming winter will surely be a cold one, here and everywhere.
Kit, did u check any seed pod from ur datura plant/s???
Oh no! MaVie
sorry Debbie, the cold weather got here too soon! the seeds never had the chance to mature. way too many flowers with no matured seeds to speak for.
i had better luck last year. each pod produced more than a 100 seeds each. this year no luck at all. am very disappointed myself :(!
i had 5 times the flowers this year, but no seed pods that matured. it is sad indeed! if i knew the pods were going to be soggy, i would have potted them and brought them indoors! this year is a bad planting season for me :(!
I am sorry it happened at this time and next year will be better. =) Mine still has a pod still not ready yet still waiting.
Here is what all my datura plants looks like this morning.
I did cut some off and letting them sit in a dry place to see if they will burst open. I know some of you may not want them because they didn't ripen on the plant and if that is the case please email me and I will send your postage back. Myself I am going to save some anyway and plant them next year, anyway here is the picture.
I also am going to try and dry some in the oven at 250 degrees hoping that this will help them to burst open on their own.

Windsurffer: I hope I caught you in time, don't put them in the oven at 250 degrees, that kind of heat will destroy the seeds. None of them will be viable. Let them dry in a warm place on their own.
MaVie: They will be soggy inside, but will dry. Last year, I thought that my dbl. purple were not mature enough to pick and this last spring, I had seedlings coming up. You may not get high germination, but some will germinate.
Debby, i pulled the pods apart, took off the fussy part. placed the seeds on a piece of paper on my working desk. they are dried after 1 day. they do not look like they are matured at all. anyway, i place the dried seeds, only a few compared to the 100's i harvested last year. btw... all seeds are white!
Kit, do not place the seedpod/seed in the oven. u will only be distroying the seed embryo when u baked them.
MaVie: Now thats a bummer. I am so sorry for you. I know what it is like to get such a let down. We can hope for a better harvast next year. Debby
hopefully Debbie.now i have to find more seeds for next year growing season. i think my friend from Canada and London will be kind enough to send me some.
at the moment, my mind is preoccupied with more severe problems.
I didn't put them in the oven after thinking about it. I did bring them in and a few of them are bursting open.
If your one of the people that I promised them to please let me know if you still want them.
Windsurffer: To ease your mind, you didn't promise me any seeds this year. I received seeds for the double purple from you last year and they were beautiful. They were my DH favorite of the daturas.
Thank You Debby I am so glad that you and your DH enjoyed the flowers.
This will be the last time I offer these seeds, it seems I have the hardest time with the seeds bulbs. I guess I am going to have to email the people that sent me the postage for the seeds, I don't think that they have seen this thread.
Windsurffer: It's Unfortunate for us, they just take too long to ripen in our zone. The double purple are the worst for taking too long. I didn't get one mature pod either this year, usually get a few. Can always try again next year.
Debby I know what you mean, planting them early doesn't seem to work. I won't be offer any seeds next year until I see them burst open.
