I have 2 Carica papaya that need homes. One is about 2' tall the other a bit shorter. Available for immediate trade.
I'm looking for non invasive flowering perennials (no herbs or vines please) http://plantsdatabase.com/go/2084/ The flowers on these trees smell wonderful and fill my gardens with fragrance.
Papaya
Wish you were doing this in the spring. As fast as they grow, I'll have to wait for seed grown papaya in the spring. Mine got very big for Iowa, I'm sure. Not so terribly tall, but wide and the trunk was very big. Love the foliage and papaya will be in my garden every year from now on. Hope you find a home for them. It is a great tropical plant and the plant fits well almost anyplace.

Stacey I would love to have one, what are you looking for??
You got it Dee and that takes care of both of them. I'm looking for flowering perennials, spring flowers in particular.
Brugie, I think this plant will probably be real big come spring, especially if we have a winter like the last one. I may be able to come up with another one in March or April, if so I will ask you first.
Thanks Stacey. I'm going to give it a try with seeds from a grocery store papaya too. That is where mine came from this year. Kyle grew them and it was a beaut.
Really Brugie? I'll have to try that. Maybe Kyle will give us some advice.
He told me to go buy a papaya (ripe). Bring it home, cut it open and scrap the seeds out. Do not wash the slimy stuff off the seed, just plant as they are. Mine was about a foot tall when he gave it to me in late April. By the time it had to go due to frost, it had a papaya about as big around as a baseball and maybe six inches long or close. I let it sit for a while, but it was just too green to ripen. There were smaller ones too. I'm assuming that when you plant the seeds, you use the rule of thumb for planting seeds. I'm sure they need to be kept warm as well.
Yes Kyle...give us some advice. I want to try to grow one from seed also!!!
Now, this is interesting! Just like the Passiflora seeds???? How much of the orange slimy stuff would you pack in with the seeds when you plant, please...Elaine
Elaine, all he said was not to clean it off the seeds. Since I've never cleaned a papaya, I have no idea what it looks like.
