Waaaaaahhhh! **Sniff-Sniff**
This doesn't look good - does it? I spent the day lugging brugs from the greenhouse to my basement. I found 4 or 5 that have these black spots in the stems. At first I thought it was damage from the cold. The spots are on the green wood and are all over the stems.
What is it? I'm assuming these plants will have to be destroyed... but hoping someone will tell me differently.
Give it to me straight - I can take it ...
wait for Susie. I had a couple and she said use Daconil. not sure if it's the same thing or not.
I hope they can be saved - but I won't count on it. Seems to be the versi types that have been infected the worst. I know they don't like to be kept too cold and my greenhouse was probably too chilly the last few nights. Ecuador Pink, Milk 'n Honey, HG, Whiskers, Peaches & Cream, Versi-Peach, and I think Kyle's Pink all have it. I'm gonna cry crocodile tears if I have to trash them :(
just hold on. I tossed an EP before Susie got here, thinking the worst.
poppysue, this is caused when temperatures are too low, mostly on versicolors and sensitive x candidas. Its no disease. You can prevent these black spots by placing sensitive plants at a warmer and sheltered position. Its a cell damage.
hehe, or then monika could drop in and ease all our minds!!! lol!
Phew!! I don't need to spray them with anything? Will the damaged stems be okay or should I cut them back?
Whew, glad Monika was here!! Yep, I've got a couple ov versis that had gotten chilled and got these. Watch the spots, if fuzz develops on them, get some Daconil(or anything with active ingredient chlorothalonil) and it will fix them right up. A preventative spray won't hurt.
What a relief!! Thanks gals :)
You don´t have to cut back. As Monika told you: It was to cold for this plant. Keeping warmer it will grow good again.
Greetings Ludger
Poppysue . . . I am so happy that all turned out well for you. Plus, we learned something new.
I knew this from Monika, smile.
I only told you, because she is sleeping now, I think.

I've only been to Heidelberg - too long ago to remember the year.
This is my first posting but have been following this forum closely for a while.
May I ask just how cool is too cool for the greenhouse to be kept to cause this sort of cell damage?
lufthansa just started flying into portland, OR which is just across the river from vancuver, they hve a special to germany US$408 anywhere else in europe for 445...
Welcome RA49, you'll learn a lot in this forum... We have a great collection of experts, hybridizers collectors and growers, then there are the wanna bes (me...) I grow a couple.
Welcome RA49, glad you jumped in. Someone will come along to answer your question that actually knows the answer.............. this is a great forum. I hope you enjoy all of us!!
Hi! and finally you got here RA49!
Monika says 12c for the versicolors. But this is outside damage - I had one or two start to do this when the temp went to 6c overnight once before they got dragged inside. They're OK now.
sure Miss Lizzy, make me go look up a converter on google!
Kell, here is a conversion chart, just mark it in your favorites and you'll always have it. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/pub/temp2.htm
I love it.............a non thinking one!!! THANKS!!!
I can remember when we were fahrenheit here - for some reason I only feel really warm or really cold when I'm thinking in fahrenheit. Celcius never sounds as cold as F.
LOl - my sickly stem made photo of the day. It's so nice that everyone can learn from poppysue's mistakes :) I just wish I'd quit being the one to make them first!
I'm sure the temps probably dipped down into the 40s in my greenhouse for a couple of nights. Most of the plants are fine but several look like this. Some are worse than others... HG being the worst. I left him out there too. I was afraid to bring him in.
Thank you Liz.
Hmmm maybe I better move my only Versicolor into the house then. I am keeping the GH about 10C (50F)
Welcome RA49, to Daves. Great place, as I'm sure you have already figured out.
Kell, I printed a chart off and have it by the computer and ready to convert while I'm reading the email.
LOL Miss Brugie, how many emails do you get with temps in C. written in them??
Well Kellinka dearest, Monika speaks celcius, Ludger, Tonny, Wintermoor - in fact everybody outside of the US. LOL
My kids don't know fahrenheit, but I'm old enough to remember it.
Well then, that is my problem Miss Lizzie.......... I do not get emails from the A+ brug list of people except for you!! and you have never talked Celsius to me! why not Miss Lizzie?? Talk Celsius to me Miss Lizzie!
I thought the US was going to change also a few years back........I wonder what happened??
LOL~~
I think they decided it was too complicated. When in college, all the sciences use Celcius. Even now when working with chemicals for the greenhouse, the manufacturers instructions use Celcius(and the metric system too!) and I'm not at a loss, but DH is.
Now everyone should email Kell and talk Celcius to her!!!
Oh NO!! It drives me crazy when you talk Celsius to me!!
