George4tax: This is a beautiful fern. I love variegated plants! I looked it up on the web, and this site listed a different fern as evergemiensis: http://www.clarksnursery.com/pteris.htm That fern is already entered here in the PDB: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/31514/ This site has a picture of Pteris ensiformis: http://www.henkbraam.nl/fern.htm

Wish I could grow this beauty, but it would have to be a house plant here in Alaska!

I believe the 1st hyperlink from my neighbor to the north does show the same plant. My photo is a closeup and does not show the whispy new growth that comes off much higher. Living in the mediterranean like San Francisco Bay Area allows many "house plants" to be grown outside. Cost of living is outrageous, but a wonderful climate.

It must be wonderful to grow some of these exotic plants outdoors... can you leave them out all year?

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Everything that I have posted is outdoors all year round. I do have to run out and cover a few if a good freeze comes along, but that is seldom more than one or two days per year.

I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I could garden year 'round! Maybe I'd slim down to a reasonable size! I suppose one always yearns to grow the things that do not grow in his or her zone, and many of the plants you post are not suited to this area, but so fascinating.

My husband was born and raised in California, so I asked him where Fremont is, and he reminded me that we visited there on our honeymoon some 11 years ago. It was in February, and I can recall being amazed that there were plants blooming.

This is lovely.God bless you sir. We are using the same name for this lovely plant.

The fern in this photo is actually Pteris cretica 'Albolineata' (NOT Pteris ensiformis, their leaf structure and growth form is slightly different but they are so similar they are often confused with each other. Both very prity ferns and like similar conditions.)

PotEmUp any thoughts on this one it's been questioned twice here plus other reports?

i also would like to know for sure :-)
i have purchased a Pteris ensiformis 'Evergemiensis' - Variegated Brake Fern
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4890315
and it has a tag from Natures Gallery ? see attached image

Casa Flora has both of them
http://www.casaflora.com/pterisensiformis.htm & http://www.casaflora.com/pteriscretica.htm
and mine seems to look more like the cretica 'Albo-lineata' ???
it got almost 2 ft tall last summer and it survived my winter
i have only had it for one year
