Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

THink I found out what my sister was talking about if you were following my other question.(of being too embarrassed to ask this question~thread)
lady that took this picture says theyare called Humbugs. I never EVER heard of or saw them before. Said they are as big as your thumb. She lives 2 hours away in the mountains. The gal I work with is 5 miles from me and she has them there too. What are they>>

tiG had it right - they are called hummingbird clearwings. These moths are related to the tomato hornworm, belonging to the sphinx moth family (Sphingidae). There are several species of Hemaris (the genus of this moth) in the U.S., with diffinis being the most common species out west, and thysbe being one of the more common species in the east. These moths are primarily day-flyers and are frequently observed nectaring at various flowers. Although harmless, they are good bumblebee mimics, which provides them some protection against potential predators that 'believe' they can sting.
