How high will it go

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

received some seeds from Glory last winter, whiskers-aurea gold x charles grimaldi. Only one came up, but it is running out of growing room. Has not Y'd yet. Winds had played havoc on the leaves a couple weeks ago.

well, I have a couple that are close to 10'!!! how high is that ceiling???

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Waterloolily!! Can you bend it over? The main stems on my Vulcanicola and a sang have fallen over and I left them there for I am lazy and I now have tons of side shoots growing straight up from all along it. Slowly bend it down..................

I love those leaves! Look deeper than whiskers.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

It is amazing how tall seedlings get. It looks like you are running out of space at the top Waterloo.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL - it's going to start creeping along the ceiling.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

They can grow very very tall.Maybe you can airlayer it and make it shorter.

Time to raise the roof. LOL

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Pretty bad when you don't know how high your ceilings are. They are only 8'ft. When your only 5'1 1/2" everythings looks tall. Going to have to find some way to tilt it out so that it stays straight if it doesn't do something soon.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

You're either gonna have to put in a skylight or cut a hole in the floor!!

Waterloo,
When you said tall you really wasn't joking. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Deb, why not put it in the basement and let it go dormant for now. It probably won't bloom until summer anyway. Monika puts her tall brugs in a sling. Just a thought.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Shirley, I think that is what I am going to do. I really want to keep the heigth with it being so straight. That is why I basically posted it was to see what kind of ideas everyone would suggest.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

you guy are afraid to prune ,I get vicious when its time to come in,seems to work,

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

we're not afraid to prune, just do a search on the threads that monika started. you'll see that a lot of us want trees for a brug alley.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I had several seedlings that had finally Y'ed, at about 10-12' and had chopped a few and finally DH said go ahead and put in the poinsettia house, it's got 14' center.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

woohoo!! I have one of the german seedlings that is soon to touch the ceiling. I'm debating between airlayering just above the soil where it is, or moving to another room where I might have 2 more inches. Think it will have to be the airlayering. That will lower it a foot or two, and it will still be a great alley tree.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

The one in the photo is a seedling and I want to keep it as a tree form since it is so nice a straight. If I run out of ceiling heigth I will put it in the basement and let it go dormat. It has a little room yet. It was my first try at growing from seed.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I have the same as your,, it keep growing straight so I decided to pinch the top off and now I have Y's. It is almost 5 feet tall..

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, that's not technically a Y, it's a split trunk. remember, monika says not to do that.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

tig, do you know the reason not to? i have a couple this summer that the top popped off. i think they'll make interesting looking plants.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I think it's because it will still have to grow to the full height again before it Y's?? I have one getting ready to touch the ceiling and I'm going to air layer it. I'm afraid if I just cut it as a 6' cutting it might not make it. actually, I think I need to make that this mornings priority, I've been meaning to do it for a month now.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i'll have to look and see what happened to mine. i had 2 just snap the tops off....don't know if it was a critter or wind.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So Deb, did you put it to sleep? You sure did well for your first seedling!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

you'll have to put lites on it to warn airplanes....

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Kell, nope its still in the dining room. Will just leave it be for now. Not in the way.

Thats cute Arlene. I just might have to this spring if it doesn't start Y'ing.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Deb, that is quite a seedling you have there. I am anxious to see what it does next spring when it puts on new growth. Arlene is right . . . you will have to put lights on it to warn airplanes

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

no wonder this one is so tall, Whiskers is a great 'tree' brug, it loves to grow and grow and grow before Y'ing. Mine wound up about 10 or 11 feet.
