Dr Seuss in the ground

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Arlene, this is a Dr Seuss that I put in the ground a couple of years ago. Last year it bloomed more, but it was a warmer spring. This year, it's had 2 flushes. I didn't mulch it last winter, haven't watered it all summer. Here is what it looks like now.

Yes, she put me in the ground,
in the ground, I am, you see;
Where I can bloom;
and bloom pretty all year round.

hehe!!! good CoCo

Cala, how did you get away without watering????

Well, it probably did get extra water from a bit of run-off from the parking lot. I guess because the spot it's in is where I dumped lots of pots of left over annuals, there is a bit of agrisoak in there too. I think lack of water is why it's so short and bushy, it had to get tough to survive!! I had 8, but this year only 2 came back up. We had a warm spell in the winter which started them to grow and then a hard freeze and it killed all but 2.

Looks really good for being neglected. In fact, it looks better than some of mine that were cared for this year.

Isn't it amazing how well some do when they are neglected and others cared for on a daily basis don't look so good. I have some that I threw in a compost pile over a month ago and I swear they are greener, fuller and more healthy looking than they were in pots that I cared for diligently all spring and summer. Maybe, I should learn something from this!

looks good cala. mine from 2 winters in the ground is about 8 feet tall, lots of stalks, but i had more blooms in one month last year than i have had all year, nothing like the show you have, a few blooms here and there.... gonna have to start this one over!

Arlene, I've got a couple at home that have been frozen back two or three times and they didn't bloom very good this year, really skimpy and they are tall too.
