water hyacinths
my sis just sent me a bag full from alabama-what do i do with them?
HELP
I need to know if they are to be potted or what-i dont have a pond so i have NO idea
Keep them all winter in a bucket? what the heck?
help they are going to die!!!
they don't get potted. it's very hard to overwinter them inside. do you have a compost pile?? cause that's probably best, they are full of good stuff.
I feel your pain! I just "chucked" mine into my garden around my shivering brugs. Every Spring I simply buy more. Apparently your sister didn't know you can't keep them over the winter either. Don't think of it as loosing a plant. Think of it as extremely excellent fertilizer. "T"
but if you want to try:: put a few of them in a 10+gal fish tank with an air stone 2-3 gold fish in bright but not direct light. nothing ventured nothing gained
no compost pile!!! =[
in the a-z hort book it say
overwinter on trays of moist soiless potting mix, minimum 59 degrees in full light
oh bother!
okay, I'll try it too. :)
I've had mine grow in soil so its worth a try!
I was thinking about one of those huge 25-50 gallon rubbermaid totes with a couple of plant lights mounted above it. I don't know about other places, but a single water hyacinth or lettuce here is $5 a pop! Darn!!
I filled up a large gray plastic garbage pail and they are floating in the greenhouse! we will see said the blind man to his deaf wife!
sorry-couldnt help my fingers!
I'm in TX and I keep my tropicals and some floaters in muck buckets in the greenhouse. I've not had any trouble doing this. I didn't use any special lights or pumps last year. I had them under the tables my plants were in and they did just fine. Hyacinth are floaters, If you don't have a greenhouse set them in a bowl in a sunny window and just make sure that you keep water in them. They may go dormant but don't throw them out, in the spring just set them outside and before you know it they will take off.
Happy Ponding!
