Is it normal for the bruggies to wilt badly when you first pot them to bring them in? Mine are definitely shocked. I think I will do what some of the others mentioned next year and plant them IN the pots.
transplanting to pots?
Woodspirit, if the weather is warm they will definitely wilt. I've had the best luck potting them up on a cool late afternoon and then making sure they are not in the sun at all for a few days.
The tops drooped terribly on several of mine after they were dug up even though I put them in the shade and misted them. It took over two weeks before they perked back up but they are fine now.
well, oddly, after only about an hour, they got over it! I wouldn't have bothered you all if I had expected that. Now these haven't made a Y but each one has some small buds. Will they go ahead and bloom inside?
I can't get to one of mine that is planted on county property in town tonight. I hope it doesn't freeze tonight. The areas where we may get frost and kinda hit & miss. If it does get frosted, should I cut it off and save the roots inside?
Woodspirit, I believe someone said that the plant will be okay with a light frost. It is the freeze that kills them.
We've put our plants under a slat shade roof and after 3 or 4 nights of frost there is no sign of damage except for one branch that stuck out a bit past the roof. The leaves wilted on the top few inches only. Had another one that didn't get moved in and most of its leaves wilted. It hasn't formed a Y yet so will be cutting it back fairly drastically. The stems haven't been affected by the frost.
Well, I am now convinced that brug-obsessed people are crazy! The two I transplanted weren't too bad, but the one at the county property was transplanted into a pot today. I couldn't pick it up and the pot too! When I dug it up, I cut off a big ole hunk of root by accident but there was still a lot left so i continued. What a gargantuan job! I finally wrestled the thing upstairs on a big wide landing and got the pot and managed to get the bruggie in the pot with some soil. It had y'd off really low and had another y or two at different levels. It has a bunch of buds on it right now. I hope next year it will form them earlier. If it lives throughout the weekend; then I guess it will make it. I am planning on keeping it potted and seeing if it blooms during the winter. Only God knows what I will do with that thing next spring.
monika how on earth do you manage to dig up all those bruggies and store them every winter...........?
