Question for HG owners......

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi Everyone,

Today while I was putting the brugs away for the winter, I knocked a bud off my HG. I decided to open it to see if it was single or maybe triple. It was single, but the thing that bothered me was that the calyx was full of water. I snipped the end off of the ones remaining on the plant and water dripped out of each one. Could this be the reason we are having trouble with the buds falling off this plant? Just trying to figure out how to get this one to bloom. Wondering why the water is backing up in this bud too. I've never had any other brug do this.

I noticed this on some of my seedling buds. In fact, one had water drpping from the bud. It didn't seem to harm the buds at all but I thought it was strange. In warmer & dryer weather they might not do this.

I have never opened up a HG bud but have noticed water on some of the others buds too. Maybe Monika can help with that question.

Many kinds have this water develop inside the calyx...not sure why..but its common enough. Most times it doesn't affect the flower development.

i ripped a couple of calyces at the bottom today to let the water out. i have the longest calyx i have ever seen on my vpx. can't wait for it to open. my hg has never had buds yet. that's the last one i will winterize probably, still deciding whether or not to bother with it.

your vpx Spring Peach or another one????

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

tig, it's a seedling from spring peach...... sorry to be confusing, it's an old habit calling it vpx. the calyx is between 9 and 10 inches long. i can't find any other brugs blooming with calyces that long.

i know i send seeds of spring peach to several people, don't know if they didn't come up or they thought they would be so-so..... maybe someone still has some. i keep asking, i think you are the only one said you might have some.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I do have some, and I've taken them out 5 times to plant and have never got around to it. I apologize, it wasn't because I didn't think they would be good, just had too many. I promise to get them out again and start them. Spring Peach is one of the best I have.

tig, have you had a calyx that long? it's 9-10 inches without the stem. it doesn't really matter, guess i'll see what this one turns out to be pretty soon. the corolla isn't showing yet. i had quite a few seeds from these, they make big pods. i only got one seed to come up out of what i had left.

I will measure in the morning. The flowers are pretty big, so could be. The ones in the pot are bigger than the one in the ground, but same flowers. I know the one in the pot was fed better.

i'm talking about the calyx on the spring peach seedling, not the spring peach. it'll be lucky if i don't go peaking at it. the next longest in my yard was about 2 inches shorter.

oh! duh:) long day babysitting!!! now you've peaked my curiousity and i'll be out measuring all day tomorrow and won't get another thing done!!! (can I blame it all on you:) hehe
