Another real beauty Phil! Thanks for posting. I could really get into this group. I will post an image of mine under the plain ensata heading. Maybe you know what variety it is?

Sorry stevenova, I don't know the group well at all. I just photographed these at Wisley because I liked them so much, but I will have a look at yours as I'm sure that's lovely too.

Philomel, 'Stippled Ripples' is beautiful. I really like the Japanes Iris. I have a number of them in my most difficult area. It is in full sun and every spring as well as after heavy thunderstorms it is underwater. During dry periods (July thru October most years) the clay is as hard as cement and has cracks 8 inches deep and and an inch wide. Dry as a bone. The Japanes iris seem to tolerate the dry just fine and thrive. I am careful to keep them watered their first year until they get established. Not many plants can take such extremes although through trial and error (and many dead plants) I have finally found enough plants to keep that area full and lush.

That's really interesting NoH2O, I thought they needed moisture all the time. That may give me the confidence to try some, as my soil is clay that performs like yours LOL

Thanks for the info

Score another on for clay ! I too grow them in clay. Not too much will grow there and it dries up over the summer. So give them a try. I think the major factor for Japanese Iris is full sun

Thanks spaniel (love the name lol) I'll be giving them a go then
