I want to buy a digital camera, but I'm totally ignorant of such things. Heck, I don't even know much about regular cameras, but I have so many things I'd like to photograph, and be able to post, etc. Those of you who have 'em, I'd love to know which ones you have and how you like them, which features you find most important and which ones you never use, etc. Obviously there are a LOT of people here who have 'em and can use them VERY well, so let's have some advice, okay? Price IS, unfortunately, a factor, so if you don't mind mentioning in round numbers how much you spent...
Off topic? You tell me!
MsBatt - I'm the very last person on earth to ever give advice about this. I don't even know how to get them from the camera to the computer.
Unless the brilliant types here come up with an answer - why don't you try asking on the Camera forum. If anyone knows they will.
Yes - Gardenwife on the camera forum will surely lead you in the right direction. If your mainly thinking about photo-ing garden and flower pictures make sure to get an optical zoom. That's what you need for great close up shots.
My camera has digital zoom or at least it is what I think it is, but of the good quality. Its very sharp. In cheap cameras the zoom function rely on pixel doubling and make unclear pictures. What I like about mine is, that it has all the functions, that you also find by most advanced cameras from Nicon and others. It has iso 100, 200 and 400. Also regulation of white balance. Adjustment according to weather. Different shutter speeds. Different focusses as auto, Marco down to 30 cm. When this funtion is set together with 3 x zoom it can blast up a clear and sharp picture of a ladybug to appear 10 cm long on a photo. There is also infinity and posibillity to set focus manually. It also come with three different kind of blitz lights and redeye reduction. Another function make it take three different exposure modes of the same motive. One middle, one a tone lighter and one a tone darker. Last but not least it can be set to640, 800 and 1600 pixels image size and all three sizes can again be set to fine, neutral and economics.

MsBatt,
I just got one for my birthday and I love it. Real easy to use. It is fairly new on the market and not alot of reviews about it yet, but it is an Olympus and you can't go wrong. Olympus D-380 - 2.0 megapixel - 5x zoom - other stuff. Comes with cd camera program to upload on computer. Cost $199 plus tax. got it at Circuit City. DH did alot of research before we bought it. This seemed to be the best on for that price range. Hope this helps.
Mine is an Olympus too....I love the software they have and is super easy to use...usually about $ 179.00 for a 2.3 megapixel at Best Buys, or Compusa.Target has these too! :-)
I just recently bought mine. I got advice in the camera talk forum, and ended up buying a factory refurbished (like new) Olympus c-2100uz 2.1 mega pixel digital camera for about $400. It used to be $1,000 retail. Has 10x optical and 2.7x digital zoom, for a total of 27x zoom....will do just about anything you can think of:) Very pleased with it; very high quality and numerous features, including movie mode.

I have a nikon coolpix 995 its most likely more camera than your looking for but it can be used in total manuel and has a good close up to it After 20 odd years of doing wedding photography this is the frist one I fond that did what i wanted it for. All my pro cameras are manuel and feel I need control of what I'm doing not that I know what I doing.
Mine is a HP,and I love it.
the main thing I'd go for is highest pixle # for your money...
