This is on the stem of a seedling. I noticed it earlier and it was just white - now it looks like black mold or sumthin.
What's this???
Sue, it looks like necrotic. I'm not sure what it is, but think it is very likely to happen to versicolors when they are too cool and wet. It happened to one of mine last year and I lost it. There isn't much information out there about it, but I sent my picture to someone who ID'ed the problem.
poppysue - I'd move it away from the others until someone tells you for sure. It's the black that doesn't look good.
I left it out to freeze. I wanted to bring this one in because it had lots of buds - but I didn't think it looked like anything I want to mess with. I have enuff brug worries!
Show your pic to the pro...Monika...she will know the most about this kind of thing.
Yep, Monika will know.
Poppysue, I thought it looked a bit familiar. Here is a link with pictures. Scroll down to sclerotinia stem rot, or anthracnose stem rot. I would bet on anthracnose. http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/cropprot/alfalfadis.htm
Yep - it does look like the anthracnose. I'm glad I didn't try to save it.
Hey - that link came from where I live.
I didn't even notice that Liz, I just noticed it was a good image. I'll have to look closer from now on.
Poppysue, anthracnose can be a pain. You don't want to get it started in the greenhouse. Be sure you disinfected your clippers if you used them on that plant.
Its a fungus and I agree with Cala. Put plant with soil and pot inclusive into the garbage can. NO COMPOSTING!
Desinfection of tools and cleaning hands during pruning is very important. I use for each plant a fresh desinfected clipper and wash my hands before going to the next plant.
