You mentioned last winter that when you bring your pots inside for winter that you put the pots in bags. I've been putting trays under for watering and it takes up too much room. Are you referring to garbage type bags? Do you wrap the entire pot?
Monika - Bags?
Well, I am not Monika (as you couldn`t guess that. *LOL* LOL*). Well, I dug all mine up and is confronted with the same question/ situation. I think of wrapping my pots to close the side holes and let the bottom holes stay free. That will be my way, but I am still curious, what Monika use to do. :)
I put them in garbage type plastic bags and do not leave the bottom holes open. My wintering is so cold, that the plants must be kept more dry. A dry root ball lets the water run through. This way, I can be sure, that the plants gets the little amount of water needed. The side holes need to be covered. Light and air kills the roots.
My pots do not have the side holes but just holes on the bottom for drainage. Do you think I should put them in plastic too? I was thinking it would help keep the moisture in.
Also - I plan to leaves mine outdoors in my greenhouse until they drop their leaves and go dormant. I haven't had a frost yet but the nights have been consistantly in the forties. Will they be okay out there for a while. I'll turn the heater on if when it starts to get too cold. I'm afraid it might be too warm in the basement for them to go dormant.
You dont need the plastic bags, poppysue. I have to, because the side walls of most my alley tree pots have large holes.
Thanks Monika - this way I can pack more plants in.
