Hi,
Due to a bout with fibro pain and scheduling problems, I haven't been able to get my irises divided or any of my newly purchased irises or blubs planted.
Is it too late for zone 5b?
If not, what precautions should I take to make sure stuff does well?
I have river silt soil that is acidic because of old-growth pines.
Thanks for your help,
Janie
too late?
Janie, it is WAY too late to divide the irises, but you have nothing to lose by planting the newly purchased ones. Feel better and stay well! John
janie,
i'm in the same zone and i'm still planting my bulbs. i have rsd, a chronic pain disease, so i too move at a different pace from most. do a little, rest a lot. :) but that stubborn streak in me is keeping me planting those bulbs, so i have something to look forward too come springtime. ;) so plant away.
my dh is going to help me lay down some mulch on wednesday. he doesn't like yard work, but he helps me with things like this when he knows i don't have enough time or energy to get it done at my snails pace. :)
take care

Janie, just to clarify, I agree totally with debi_z, you can continue to plant those bulbs as long as the ground is workable. What I was saying is that unless you really need to divide your tall bearded iris (German Iris)right now, you will sacrifice bloom this coming spring by dividing them now. Take care, John
Thanks everyone for your help...
I got the irises I bought this year into the new bed by the front walk (HURRAH, 2 birds with one stone) and the bulbs done, we made a line of blue crocus bulbs next to the sidewalk all along the front edge of our front yard. In the spring we are going to widen the driveway by adding a path of brick pavers on each side so you are stepping on stones and not grass when you exit your car. Then I'll plant more crocus along the sides of these paths. What a joy it will be in 2004 (if the Lord tarries!) to see these pop up in spring, I can't wait.
Always thinking ahead,
Janie
