Hanging his head.......

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

A major number of SPECIAL brug crosses failed to hold the pods after our hot/cold snap.22 crosses aborted.I still have pods holding and growing on several plants..but gets very discouraging to think the pods are setting then over night they all drop. Will still have plenty to grow out next year..but will set me back another year at least on some of the really great crosses. **SIGHH**

Hamilton, Canada

Kyle this is really tragic. You must be disappointed, but thankfully there are still pods that are still there. Perhaps you can do some crosses over the winter if you allow them to bloom indoors.

Really sorry to hear that.....there goes mother nature messing up again!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

You are so right....mother nature has really ruined my summer!!! Hope next year is better, can't be any worse!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Kyle, what a shame. My c. Dbl White lost one out of three pods after I brought it into the GH. It was crossed to Butterfly.I've got my fingers crossed the other two stay on. It lost all it's flower buds too.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kyle, after today's winds you will probably lose more. This is the worst wind I've seen in a long time. Some of my brugs are bent in half. The ones with pods have been moved, but I anticipate having to move them again as the winds switch directions. Poor Whiskers is really taking a beating, but I just couldn't get her moved. I'm hoping this will stop soon. Must be the remnants of the hurricane. Hang in there........maybe things will look up soon.

OH...... how sad to hear about those dropped pods, Kyle. Mother Nature sure has a way of 'humbling' us...doesn't she? Thank goodness some of the pods escaped her wrath. I'll keep my fingers crossed that those remaining pods will reward your efforts with some spectacular new Brugs!

Thanks to all...this is what really tries our patience sometimes...Iowa is so brutal in weather...turns from one extreme to another in no time..I hate it here...wanna go back out west.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Try my place. You might love Iowa again, LOL!

Anyone..........what is the lowest temp a brug can handle without doing any damage? I know I can protect from frost, but just wondering about the temp. It is to get down into the mid thirties on Sun. night. Maybe as low as 34 degrees.

Hamilton, Canada

its getting pretty cool here during the day and at night. I have buds on many plants I bought from Liz and I'm just begging that they bloom before the frost. I only need the grace of 2 weeks at most...

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Brugie, it went to 33 here last night. I still have 4 large Brugs outside until SIL finishes addition this weekend. I layed them down and covered them up with flannel sheets and they did fine. All the ones still in the ground that weren't covered are fine too. I did notice that with the cooler temps the flowers are smaller and they are starting to drop buds.I can't believe we haven't had a frost yet here.Wind is starting to get bad here. Predicting 30 - 40 m winds with 50m gusts.I have to go out and lay my big Whiskers back down as it's taking a bad whipping and it has several pods on it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sounds like this storm system is hitting everyone. Hope everything will be okay. I'm bring mine in tomorrow if they have pods on them. The others, I'll just take a chance on. The cuttings will come in too.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

The winds were nasty here all day and are still blowing hard!I had a almost no weight on the trailer I took out to Erie and the wind was throwing me around like a rag doll,it was worse coming back with doubles!Hairy Nite on the road!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Brugie..I have had brugs outsidein temps down to 18 f and still regrew...hard frost is needed to kill the stems....temps in the low 20's for several hours.Light frost will make a few leaves darken..but won't hurt them. :-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Kyle, I won't get in such a hurry to move them. I told Jim if he got up and there was frost on the ground...he was to come and get me and I'd use the water hose on them.

Will a frost affect seed pods in any way?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

As long as the pods don't actually freeze they will be alright.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks. Just don't know how I can get everything done in a day. Won't worry so much about most of them now.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kyle, so sorry you lost your pods. I had some knocked off in the wind when they fell over, or others fell on them. Jessie Noel aborted a bunch of half grown pods, it looked like they inside filled with water. Havent had that happen before.
Snow, I've lost lots of C. Double White pods this year, seems like they grow a bit then fall off. Golden Lady was just as bad.
Kyle, are you bringing some brugs inside the greenhouse so they will keep on blooming?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Cala...they keep blooming for about a month or so in the basement even while resting. :-)
