I have received some cuttings from Poppysue (Eric's crosses). THANKS Poppysue! :-)
I want to keep the numbers with the brugs. My attempts at plant labeling have been pretty sad! The rain washes everything off. I think I've tried just about every kind of permanent marker there is. Nothing is working! I've struck out at the garden centers and online for labels too. Do you make your own plant tags or what do you use? If you make them, what type of writing medium do you use?
I know these won't be outside until spring, but I'd like to make the tags now before I pot them up.
Thanks anyone who can help with suggestions!
Received new cuttings-need labeling ideas
I've had good results with regular pencil. It doesn't fade. The black grease pencils work good too and the writing is darker so it's easier to read.
I cut up the vinyl mini-blinds to use as the labels. Even if you have to buy a new one to cut up they're cheaper than regular plant labels. Just a few dollors and you'll get hundreds of labels from a small blind.
that's what I use too, and it's worked better than anything
Me too..plus a fade/sun proof pen made for labels... :-)
Well, whaddya know! Vinyl mini blinds..and pencil? How economical that would be! I can just see em' all out in the yard! Seriously, I'll give it a go. Nothing worse than planting something and a few months (even weeks some days! LOL) later, I forget what variety it is. Thanks!
I've used the mini blinds also with pencil. They seem to last the longest. Liz has a method where she uses black marking pen on a plastic strip. She then cuts a small slit in the plastic, wraps around the trunk of the plant and slips the end through the slit much the same way that some trees are shrubs are tagged. This is an even better method so the tag doesn't get moved. I adoped another method by using mini blind strips, punch a hole in the end and tie a loop of string aroung it. I then tie the string around the trunk of the plant.
I should try engraving on the mini blinds.....
