Glory!! Here's my baby Ollie Blooming!

Gloria, Here's a picture of my Baby Ollie Blooms that I grew from seed you sent me. You asked me to post it. It's white, and I love it anyway. I've not yet discovered why white is undesirable amongst all the brug growers.

Glad to see you are back Joan.......I was afraid I had scared you away for good and was feeling terrible! That is a very pretty one........... I love the flounce! I have none that flounce. I am flounceless but desirous of flounce.
Speaking for me, it isnot that it is undesirable, and not that it is even less beautiful than the colored ones...........but it is more common and most seed blooms white so showing typical human traits, I want most what I do not have and what is hard for me to get. If all colors were equal, I probably would tend toward the white ones for they are so beautiful in their simplistic elegance!

Aw, Kell, I'm sorry. You didn't scare me away. I thought I had told you that. Hey, I'm tougher than an old boot. Stick with me. I had to go out of town for a couple days to a stuffy business meeting, but I'm back home in the garden with friends now.

I came home to my only two blooming brugs. One is this Ollie I posted and the other is the Dr. Suess that started blooming last week. The Dr. Suess was about finished blooming when I left and we've now discovered that it drops the blossoms when they're done. (Leaves too?!?!?) This thing shed most of it's spent blossoms and LOTS of leaves while I was gone. Going dormant? Freaked my Son and Husband out.

This is funny.....when I drove in the yard, both DS and DH were there to meet me. They said, "We watered them and took them inside everynight and outside every morning and they still did this!!!!" LOL! They tried so hard, but the brugs started to drop their leaves like crazy. They are convinced that it's because I was gone and they had something to do with it. I think that they might have gotten a little on the dry side and might not have been taken inside and out in a timely manner, so maybe they are trying to go dormant?

Can I save them? (I've taken this thread off topic I'm afraid.)

Oh you did Joan, but then I did not see you. I was looking for you! Yes, you definitely can save them. Brugs are incredibly forgiving. they drop everything if allowed to dryout.....they droop then drop! But just as fast they come back! The dropping mechanism is to save itself for it can't keep everything alive without water so it shuts down to keep the main trunk alive. Just water well and fertilize and they will sprout right away. What are you going to do with them for the winter? maybe they just got to cold, but it would have to get very cold to drop its leaves. here it is getting in the low 50s at night and mine are still growing.

Love ya Kell! Thanks for worrying about me. :)

So...they droop and drop when they don't get the water and light they are accustomed to. (Read...Mom's out of town!) The Dr. Suess, which pouted the most, was mostly done blooming anyway.

So answer me this. Do brugs actually go dormant? If so, what do I do with it now, since it's already dropping it's leaves. How do I take it to the basement and keep it dormant/alive until next spring?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

When I fail to water fast enough, the brugs first totally droop, I usually catch the droop within a couple hours. Then in the next few days, depending on long it drooped, some of the leaves turn yellow and drop off. Did your leaves turn yellow? I guess your DH and DS could have overwatered them also, if it was cold enough and the water was just sitting there. I have never had an overwatered brug but if like other plants it probably looks more like mush.

Monika has said that the wild ones go dormant for about 6 weeks, I believe it is in December and January. If it is cold enough, I would just take it down there and reduce the watering by quite a bit. It will drop lots more leaves. It may need the cold to slow down its metabolism so it goes dormant and not dead! I believe Monika said she waters every 2 weeks or maybe it was every month. I know she has discussed it in detail on a few threads. Either persuade tiG to share with you all her Monika notes or do a search for her threads. The trouble is she often drops her gems in other people's threads. I plan on not letting mine go so dormant here, for it is warmer here. I am going to cover mine in a plastic makeshift greenhouse just to protect them if there is a bad frost.

JoanJ, they drop leaves when brought inside for winter, then usually again when put out in spring. it's just what they do. i like your white too. for me, it's a matter of having 50 something brugs, i only want so many whites. have been thinning all colors this year, making room for new babies and seedlings.
isn't it funny how when people leave their brugs they start blooming.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Joan, not sure if you know that your baby isn't Ollie. Anything grown from seed is not the same as the parent and can't have that name. It's very nice!

arlene, I noticed we are all going off when they start blooming. I'm not leaving my house again until winter!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Joan, You'll have to think of a name for your baby.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I didn't know that tiG. I will think of a new name for it then.
