Is that the colour when it is ripe? Our bilberries are very different, growing on low scrubby bushes, and they are black when ripe. They taste rather like blueberries, but much smaller.

No, that's the flower. The berries are blue... haven't you ever seen a bilberry flower? =)

No I dont think I have Evert. I never tend to notice them until they are fruiting. They are only found up on the moors.

Here bilberries are very common, you find them from every forest. :) And forests are everywhere. ;)

Last week I collected enough bilberries to bake a tart and covered it with cream when cooked. It takes me back to my childhood when we used to collect the berries from the fells in County Durham. I have planted a bilberry plant in a pot with lots of peat, I hope it does well.
