i picked a pink beauty pod yesterday, the pod was yellowing and gushy. 70 seeds mostly all nice size and very dark brown when i picked them, a few a lighter brown.
my question is do your pods go gushy before they whither and dry on the plant?
question for Eclipse and Monika
I know this wasn't for me, but mine do.(that is if I can leave them alone long enough)
Cala, the question is for you too, i just didn't know if you left them that long. so do they get super yellow and gushy and after that they start drying up?
or Ludger?

Arlene, believe it or not, I left several, lol. I was so busy with the pollinating and potting up of stuff, I missed them. The pencuncle turned all yellow, the pod turned all yellow and was mushy(it was gross for a few days), then it dried out. I planted some of the seeds and they came right up.
I am getting better at letting them ripen completely, I will go by and squeeze them, it's so hard to resist, but I've not cut a slit in a single pod this summer!!
so it only took a few days to go from gushy to dried out? the seeds are beautiful and i can't imagine that the smaller seeds would grow anymore in a few days.
Arlene, I'd plant them. I don't think the small ones will mature any more, they probably aren't viable anyway. But this is a question for more expert seed setters. It's night where Monika is, but where's Kyle.
cala, did you leave them on when they were gushy until they dried out? when i say small seeds, i am talking seeds that are still larger than isabella seeds, 5-6. i wonder if that means they are seeds where the aurea genes didn't carry.
arlene, seed pods have their own way to get ripe. Some do it just like the way, its says in the book, others get mushy or fall off, before you notice. Sometimes, the state of ripeness can bee seen on the color change of the stalk from green to yellow. But about the same amount turns mushy when ripe. Some dry on the plant, others just fell off.
thanks, Monika!!!
Also thanks from me. I will take note of the pods here. aurea Orange change color like a Datura would do and then the pod loosen from the stalk. They were soft, but not at all dry or mushy. :) Monika, btw. I don`t remember where to have seen a photo of KBS, that looks like aurea orange flowers. Do KBS get soft apricot with a kind of bronze nuance stribes? Also how long time takes L`Amour pods to ripe?
Tonny, liz or brugcrazy posted under amarillo paja i think?
i picked my second pod, am separating for planting.
the 3 smallest seeds, which are not small.
the lighter brown seeds which are a nice brown.
the remainder.
will plant these 3 sets in different pots to judge germination and then the flowers when they bloom. am curious if smaller or lighter seeds will have distinctively different plants/flowers.
Oh they are both soooo pretty!
Arlene..I leave mine on the plant till they get yellowish and start getting squishy. :-)
thanks, eclipse. these were yellow and squishy. i thought you had said til they were completely dried up and shriveled.
I think it was Earl when we went from the Fla Swap to his greenhouse that said that.
Arlene, I picked a pod from Versicolor Peach today, the penduncle hadn't really turned yellow, but the pod had lots of yellow on it and was squishy at the end. The seeds were all dark brown.
Isabella doesn't turn yellow when the seeds are ripe, the calyx that's been over the pod turns brown, then I know it's time to pick. Don't know if that's just my one weird plant or all Isabellas.
