Fruit of Schefflera actinophulla
To my surprise my shefflera plant has produced several green bud clusters. The plant is pretty tall (5-6 ft) and sits in a space that gets light from two sides. Faces both south and west. Lots of light, much of the day. I have been feeding it sporadically, when I remember, just an ordinary water soluble plant food. The flowers look as if they have a redish tinge. I live in Boston area, it's february, and this is an unexpected but very welcome event. Is this typical?
well, it seems to be blooming at the right time of year. never heard of one blooming indoors, however. that's interesting.
i have one of the dang things. this is the first time it has bloomed in the five years i have had it. it's between 15 and 18 feet tall, so i haven't been able to see the bloom as clearly as this photo (again, i am grateful to island jim for his generosity). there are 12 or more red flower/fruit spikes way up at the top of the plant, looking just like this photo (through my binoculars). there must be a reason why it keeps its goodies way up there, either birds or animals that it favors. it is now end of july, but this phenomenon started more than a month ago.
Mine, which is also about 15' high, has not bloomed yet. The fruit I photographed had been blown out of the top of a neighbor's tree by Hurricane Georges a couple of years ago.
