I had so many pods on Becca Lynn. I was a good brug mommy and left the old blooms to fall on their own, then the calyx fell off. I noticed some pods had fallen off the pencuncle and then the pencuncle fell, now they are all falling. What is wrong with them? What did I do wrong? I haven't let it get too dry, gave it plant food(the good stuff) and it was happening before the storms and rain.
Falling pods
I thought that only happened with buds. Hope it isn't that little tiny worm at work again.
I couldn't find any bugs.
I guess if it all went smoothly brugs would not keep you so interested!!! But what a pain!
can the sudden change in temperature affect the peduncle to fall off. i've notice that in all the blooms i have around here. when the night time temp went down, the following day, most of the flowers are on the ground.
I've had some pretty cold nights here. I haven't noticed any buds falling off tho. I did loose a few tiny buds on a couple when I let them get too dry. Last night got down to 45 degrees. I checked all the brugs & they looked fine so far.
Now you all know what I have been going through all summer, buds fell off, after I waited so long... Just now getting some ready to bloom! Lots of them!
It's not been below 62*F here. This was happening before we got cooler at night, the nights were still 68-72*. I don't think I've let it dry out, this plant gets the same treatment as all the others around it.
How big were the pods? Maybe it's not pod fertile? Has anyone else been able to set pods to her?
Poppysue, the pods were not big, they seemed to be growing, but you may be right, since all that fell were at exactly the same stage of development. Her sister Jessie Noel has big pods. I used pollen from several different varieties, just in case that was the problem, but it doesnt matter which pollen was applied, all pods are falling. Here is a pod on Jessie Noel.
Cala...some varieties are better pod parents then others..some won't seem to hold pods no matter what pollen is used. Some kinds just aren't suited as seed parents. Others..on the other hand can set seeds at the drop of a hat.Moon Shine does this..always sets seeds with or without me.......... :-)
Eclipse, I've noticed that with other varieties. Some set seeds on every bloom, and each pod will mature, like Whiskers. Some like Ecuador Pink and others only have a few pods that will mature, but make excellent pollen donors. I will use the pollen from Becca Lynn instead of trying to set pods on her.(but you guys know me, I don't give up easily)
that's what i thought eclipse, and although creamsickle seems to have very fluffy, abundant pollen i have not gotten it to stick on anything. and interestingly on kyle's pink, only the pods i have pollinated have taken, the moths have not set one pod on her.
Arlene, that's true for me too, with Kyles Pink.
