Just wanted to write and say that while I was in the garden today, I found lots of pods on the brugs that I didn't pollinate. Maya is carrying a bunch, all on one side, like the moth just went down the row. If that is how it did it, Maya would be crossed with Dr. Suess, but can't trust him to do what I think he would. Anyway, the pods will be removed. Most of the brugs on that row have new pods formed. He must have been a busy one or had lots of friends.
Lots of pods........
Now that is really interesting. I wonder what their route patterns are like. Now if one had the time to just sit and watch them it would be interesting to know. My flowers are full of those little tiny ants. Before I stick my nose in I check to see what's in there first...lol..
Joydie, I've seen some ants too, they were carrying the pollen away.
Saw ants in some of mine yesterday also:) Never thought about them cross-pollinating:)
Brugie - why are you going to remove the pods?
I'm going to toss all moth induced pods, there are too many good known crosses this year.
tig, i have pulled a few pods off some plants, no sense letting them ripen. but there's no way i'm throwing away pods off my pink beauty and butterfly.
oh me either!!! I think it will help if most of what's being grown next year is known parentage, and then the Bfly and PinkBeauties will be excused cause they'll be so gorgeous:)!!
Sue, I'm not keeping them for the same reason that tiG mentioned. We have so many unnamed brugs out there now, there is no need to add to the confusion.
Cala they must be after the pollen...there are swarms of them. They've only come out since the flowers started blooming. Fat white spiders are tucked up everywhere in the new leaf growth. I kill a bunch of them every morning. I don't want my plants full of eggs when I bring them in for the winter. I would hate to have an infestation of spiders over the winter. Yuck!
I would die if I saw a snake for fear it would have laid eggs somewhere...
I have pods that I didn't pollinate myself on Rosalie. I'm torn. I have snapped off everything else that I didn't do myself but I just can't force myself to get rid of these.
Liz, you could always send the pods this way if you decided you didn't want them. I just love these and it doesn't matter if they have names or not. I have been planting brugs all over. Hopefully next year my yard will be wonderful.
I'll be watching them too. They are nowhere near a Frosty Pink. They are in the Monika corral so am hoping that my insects were lazy and just flew to the next one over. LOL
Hey,I gotta snake in my wood pile,he was in there with another one today, when I picked up a peice of wood I guess I had grabbed a hold of the one snake too.All of a sudden something didn't feel right and I see this thing swinging towards me.I'm not afraid of them and I don't even mind picking them up but when your not expecting it ,well,it was a shock. His buddy stuck around for me to take a picture of him
OK - what kind is that?
I think its just a garter snake
That's way bigger than my garter snake - you must be feeding them well.
Well I know he's not eating chipmunks...LOL
there is one living in the woodpile with him.I have relocated the rest of his family.
Last year I had sunflower seeds coming up in all my seedling I was starting under light, plants would be dug up,seedling pulled out....I blamed the mice.
Wrong answer.I had chipmunks living in my house, they were grabbing my parrots food that she drops.....so far I have trapped 5 chipmunks in my living room.
I thought snakes eat rodents....
When do snakes shed their skin? We found a snake skin in the greenhouse yesterday when we were cleaning it out. I'm not dealing with the thought of them being in there next spring again.
Everytime they get BIGGER! LOL ,so it could have been yesterday!
In yoru area there are two that look almost alike. The common garter snake and the ribbon snake. Here is a picture of the ribbon snake. http://www.chicagoherp.org/herps/snake/Tsaurit.htm
and the garter snakehttp://www.chicagoherp.org/herps/snake/Tsirtal.htm
Jump wasn't the word for it!LOL
Glad no one was watching....
Ours are the Garter Snake. Wish they were GONE snakes. I know he wasn't in the greenhouse yesterday because there was nothing left in it but the shelves. May have to put a cement floor in there. Sitting here with goosebumps after looking at those pictures. I'm not a scaredy cat, but I just can't stand snakes.
I forgot to tell y'all I got snake bit the other day!! Little Ball Python of DD got out and I while looking in the closet for him, he nipped me. He doesn't have teeth really, just scraped the skin. I knocked half the stuff out of the closet!! I wasn't about to go to bed with him lose in the house.
ROTFLMAO!!!!!
I always wanted a pet snake. But if saw one where I was not expecting it and it was up close and personal, I would be dead. Really CC, chipmonks in your livng room?? Geez, I would think they would eat your house frame.
you keep a python in the house?? What?? are you nuts?? Sorry - scaredy cat here.
I detest snakes. My SIL has a 8' snake in the house with my baby and he knows if that snake ever gets her he might as well give up cause we are going to get him. Baby and I were sitting in floor of her room one day and he comes to the door and says 'get her off floor and out of here'. It took me a couple of seconds and then I ran like heck. I hate any kind of snake now because of the two he has.
I used to raise Pharoah Quail for distribution to restaurants. One day a black snake got into the building and into a cage. He ate 3 quail. Trouble was, then he could't get back out of the cage because of the 3 large lumps in his upper body. I caught him, put him in a tote sack and drove about a mile away and dumped him.
I also was trying to help my spousal unit pull one out of a tree that was eating baby robins. When he fell to the ground, I tried to grab him but he grabbed me first. He actually shook my hand like a dog would. I thought my mother-in-law was going to faint dead away...........
OH tiG, that is so dangerous. I have read where the snake gets out and....................
You can't budge him??? I would kill the snakes. I am sorry but I would. Last year a pet snake even killed a 13 year old I think she was.
When my boy was a baby I had my husband put a screen door that automatically closed on his room so that the cats could not get in. People make too many mistakes.
kell, I couldn't agree more. This is a boa constrictor and the smaller one is a ball python. even my DD hates them. he won't budge. My DH has sworn to take him out if anything happens to Emily.
I moved a water trough the other day and under it was about 10 baby bull snakes. They were not happy to have their warm home removed. They have since relocated to goodness knows where. I love the bull snakes because if they are around you don't have the problems with rattlesnakes. They eat the rattlesnakes.
See,snakes can be good......
Yes, they are and I didn't even kill the one that bit me. We have a little area here that has rattlesnakes with a lot of yellow on them, some sort of sub-species I assume. They are pretty to look at, but I draw the line about letting those guys stay on my property.
You all don't even want to hear my opinion of people who keep snakes in their houses:)
