Terrible wind yesterday

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Bill called me to hurry and get to the greenhouse. When I got there most of the big potted brugs were laying on their sides. Several seedlings that had buds lost their tops, below the Y. I keep telling myself they were probably white anyway.
Jessie Noel fell on L'Amour and took out a dozen or so seed pods, and Jessie lost a limb and big pod. Rosamond lost a lot of blooms and a few branches. White Pearl X Big was on it's side, but didn't lose its top, thank goodness. I spent most of yesterday trying to get them moved inside because as I would set them up, the wind would blow them over again.
How did the Mississippi brug growers fare in the wind and rain? How about the Florida growers?
Brugie and all others, I know exactly how you felt when your plant broke.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey Cala,
The top snapped out of a small one in the ground (about 3 feet).
My huge one in the ground did okay. I did put the four foot piece of fence around it and nothing broke off, it just looks a little worse for wear. But..I didn't think about the stalks rubbing on the fence. It rubbed through the bark. Hope it's not gonna kill the tops cause it's got lots of buds on it again.
I am amazed at something though. I laid down everything that was in pots. I couldn't believe two days later how the tops had already turned upward. Will they straighten or just make a little crook?
Did I remember to put stamps for brug seeds in that note?
I will send some if I didn't.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I had three blooming and I lost all the blooms but two but no other damage that I can see. I was standing in the front door looking at them swaying back and forth. I had a large double purple datura that was laying over to the side but I staked it and I think it will be alright. Sorry you had a bad time of it.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Gingerlily, yes you put stamps, I'll get everything mailed first of the week. The bark should heal, but the crook will always be there. It will grow straight above the crook, and you can try taping a "brace" to the crooked part to straighten it if you like. I should have laid the big ones down, but thought the pots were heavy enough to stay upright.
GRC, do you have more buds coming along? I hope so.
Glad y'all survived without too much damage.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Cala . . So sorry to hear about all that wind and the damage it did. I know it is upsetting after all the time that was spent getting them to where they were.
Ginger and GC it sounds as though you had quite a bit of wind also. I am glad it was not any worse for all of you.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

So sorry Cala. I know the feeling. I came home from work yesterday and found Becca Lynn on top of my not arborea, the not Pink Favorite was laying face down on the deck, the Charles Grimaldi you had given me was finally starting to bud out and was down the steps, and the versi orange was laying on top of Kyle's Pink. A couple of the unknown other pink ones were laying down and the seedling from Busybee was also laying down. All in all they faired pretty well, just lost a couple blooms and a top piece of Charles was broke off.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

we've had a lot of wind here too. I keep setting pots back upright, we're in an alley that catches a lot of wind anyway. What worries me is where the ground is so wet and literally some are coming up! The tops are so heavy they just start leaning. I think I have all the biggest ones staked up now so I'm hoping that will be enough. Next year I'm going to have to stake like Monika does. I lost two big woody branches to the wind/weight, but no tops and nothing serious. praise the Lord.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

you guys,I feel so bad for you,Calla, bummed about those l'amour seed pods.....,we got bad winds last nite but not as bad as were expected, lost alot of flowers that were blooming but the buds are ok.Most of the big ones in pots are in the GH,no cover on the side but the top is on so I think that saved them

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I can't believe I didn't lose blooms! I hate that you all did. and yes, the L'amour pods just makes me sick! but seems we're gonna make it. I'm glad you have that GH karyn, when will it be finished?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

We get high winds here every so often that really tear the flowers..but knock on wood** I haven't ever had a plant fall over and break......guess my plants are too woody to do any damamge.Hope the plants come back OK Susie! ((HUGS))

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Thanks all. The plants that lost their tops weren't knocked over. It just snapped the tops out, guess the weight of the top, plus all the rain we'd had made then brittle. Jessie Noel fell on L'Amour and where they hit each other, Jessie lost a limb, but I trimmed all the big leaves off and stuck it in vermiculite hoping the pod will ripen. They did come thru pretty good considering how many fell over. Bill didn't even yell at me when one big pot fell on some mums.
I was really glad that Pearlmutt seedlings and White Pearl Seedlings didn't get hurt. Eventide lost a few blooms, but to be as top heavy as it was, it survived pretty good.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can take anything but wind and hail. I'm sorry you had so many pods break off, but the brugs will come back. Just such a disappointment to see damage. Hope everything gets better as the day goes on.

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

We had some pretty bad winds out of this storm too, Cala. Only one Dr. Seuss took a tumble and took some oleanders with it. It lost a couple of small places on the limbs. I am sorry you lost pods, I know you must really get excited over those. Hope everthing works out for you. Have a better day! Tracey

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Sorry abour your damage Cala. We had winds here and I was out in the pouring rain last night trying to stand them back up after the big ones got blown over. Had them staked too and the wind pulled the stakes up. Lost a few pods on Whiskers and the top on Snowhermit. They're all layed down now and will be covered up tonight with sheets as DH wants to leave for a last camping overnighter.Hope they will be OK as I'll be gone tonight.

(Zone 6a)

Sorry to hear about the wind damage, Cala. I know how you must feel....nursing those brugs all summer only to have mother nature do this!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Thanks all, I was so disappointed, but it's okay today. I stuck the tops that broke into soil to root, we will see how they do.

Hamilton, Canada

We got the rain up here also. It rained so hard that the water was flowing down the street. It wouldn't even soak into the ground as the ground is so dry from lack of rain most of the summer. I lost flowers, but no other damage.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Cala,
I'm not in a rush, I'm just pretty forgetful at times and got to wondering if I put them in.

The staking idea was great. I went right out and did that while they still had tenderness in that area. They look so much better. I only broke 1 small one out of 10 I staked. Of course I potted it right up so maybe it will root.

Amazing sometimes how dumb we can be. Why couldn't I figure out that simple solution?

Thanks for your expertise. You sure help us all out.

Cala, so sorry you lost your L'Amour pods :~(

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

ah, it's okay, there will be more.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I feel so bad for you all............we have no rain or wind or storms here all spring, summer and fall! Only in winter. Of course we could have an earthquake at any moment and swallow me and the brugs up in the earth's bowels in 1 gulp!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I lost the top off one of my seedlings (of course one with buds) in yesterdays wind. Not sure the buds will open but I stuck it a bucket anyhow. It's suppose to be windy today also. I went around and stripped a lot of the leaves off the big plants. I figured it would be less surface for the wind to catch - I just hope the buds & my pods will hang on.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Poppysue, we will keep our fingers crossed for you.
