Do you know this plant?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I posted this in ID and here too awhile ago. Now that it it blooming, I am wondering if any of you tropical lovers know what it is. The seeds were marked Hibiscus acestosella. Is it? The color photographed beautifully and exact. :) I just noticed my flash is not working. Argh.

I have no idea what it is, it sure is a beauty though....

Bad,
Acetosella that i have has red foliage and more rounded tips..the flowers are very small and hardly noticable. So this is a different form.I'll see if I can cross reference it for you. :-)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That would be great! It looks much different than the acetosella I grew a few years ago. As far as I remember the leaves looked sort of like maple leaves and had a red tint to them.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Eclipse, what do you think about the possibility of it being cannabinus or radiatus?? Floridian sent me some nice suggestions.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Badseed could be cannabinus the leaves look right.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

it looks like the cannabinus leave's from the seeds that arlene sent me

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

The leaves on mine are just like this, but the bloom is red.

I am pretty sure it is H. radiatus:) http://www.plantatlas.usf.edu/image.asp?imageID=5868

I love the color of that flower!! It's beautiful.

I have been trying to figure this plant out for a couple of months. I want to thank everyone for their efforts to help. Some stupid observations-my plants leaves all have seven lobes. Arsenic, the one in your pic has three lobes. All the pictures I could find of cannabinus show it with pale yellow flowers. How variable are the leaf forms and flower colors on either? Susie, if you want some let me know. I can try to root some or save seeds. Fair warning, it gets about six feet tall and nearly as wide. :)

This is the plant that Arlene gave me & Tig, she said she thought it had a blue flower - mine has just started blooming too - just like your pic Chele.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Azalea..just out of curiosity...you said that maybe the flower is blue...could this be the California Hibiscus(Alygoyne huegeli)??????? the reason I say this is the shape of the foliage????? Elaine

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Azalea, did I read somewhere that you or Arlene posted she gave you H. cannabinus? I remember seeing that somewhere.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Probably, Lol, CRS ya know!!

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

hehe...i was gonna say that i saw a plant like this in arsenic's garden website, but i see he's already gotten it! have you guys seen his garden??? i'm still looking through his pics...4 days now, and haven't seen them all.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Did anyone save seeds from this? Mine froze before I could get any. :(

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes - good memory!! Sorry , I didn't get any seeds from mine either, or cuttings, I think it is supposed to return for me tho, then you are welcome to cuttings when it does.

Remind me in a couple of months - it should be coming up by then if it's going to.

If anyone has an extra of it or the copper leafed one please let me know.I'd really like one and when I grew them from seed last year they budded just before frost ,and I never got a bloom.......

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Meiyu!! How the heck are you? I still would love to get this if you have a spare. Mine did bloom last year obviously, but I didn't get any seeds. After I started mine, I gave the rest of the seeds away. Thanks a bunch for posting! I forgot all about this. LOL

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Haha...yes, I've been bringing up a lot of old threads and dusting them off since these were the ones I was watching before becoming sickened and depressed throughout the winter months...something about spring, though, is making everything more cheerful and giving me the energy to get better! Mine is still too small to cut, but as soon as I can, I will. I went to Stan's yard the other day, but he was really busy in the garden trying to cut his wild flowers back before the sun went down. I will try again this weekend. He probably has some coming back that he doesn't want growing and will pull up a few for me. I owe Grovespirit one first, but I'll get you one soon, k?

If anyone gets seeds or anything of any of the other colors beside my purple, I'll find something to trade from my gardens!!

Meiyu, nice to see you posting again! If you happen to get another start from your neighbor, I would love to have one if you can spare it. How is the pond comming along? Did the umbrella palm I gave to Peter survive the winter? If not, I have tons more. Are you going to either of the TX roundups this year? I would love to meet you this time as well as see your family again.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi, Toadlily!!! How are you!!! Yes, I will get you one...you're number 3, k? Even if he doesn't have any new sprouts right now, no worries...next to potato vines and brugs, they are about the easiest thing to root! Mine will be big enough soon!!

You're the one who sent the umbrella palm? Thank you!!! Yes, I can't believe it, but yes, it has survived! It got thrown into a pot and never watered, but it was outside and it came back to life in Feb, froze up again, then sprung back last month...pretty tough little guy!! I was going to put it by the pond, but I have this area on the side of the house that never drains...black clay over a slab of limestone...I needed plants that can live in swamp conditions over there. I'll take a picture for you and post it. I love it!!

Do you know who gave me the jasmine? I wasn't sure what it was until a couple of days ago when it started blooming!! And it's one that I don't have yet...my landscaper says it's a confederate jasmine (I have sambac and chinese)...it smells soooo lovely!!!

What do you mean 'either' of them...there are more than one? I only know about a round-up in Fredericksburg in October (I think?). When is the other one? I'll be at both wherever they are!! I'm sooo mad I had to miss Texoma at the last minute...my hubby and stepbrat (kidding) had such a great time!! I only got to go from 4am-9am on the last day to sleep in between Mana shows, but got to meet Smockette! No one else was around!! I have so many things from that round-up, not sure what some of them are, or who gave them to me, but I love them all!!

As for the pond, it's still bare. Posting a picture below. I can't stand the algae, so I shocked it with pool chemicals...do you think the pond irises will still live? It's been 4 days now and they seem amazingly okay, but I was wondering if they would live in the swamp side of the house? I planted some short, red canna seeds around it, if you can see them in the picture, and I have sambac jasmine on the sides which I intend to keep short and bushy. I don't know what else I'm going to plant up there...need something to hide the plastic edges, and maybe trail down around the walls...my landscaper said climbing rosemary because I need something evergreen, but I don't think it's all that attractive. What do you think I should do? Oh, and aren't the fish cute? They are from my mother's old garden...

Meiyu,
Sorry I haven't been here to answer. Gary, my husband, was mobilized Wednesday by the Navy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and will be going overseas on Monday. The orders are for at least one year, but can be held over for up to 2 years depending on their need. It has had us running like crazy for the past couple of days getting him ready. They origionally wanted him to leave today, but there was just no way we could get everything done in that amount of time so they gave him an extention until Monday.
Your pond look wonderful! I don't know that I woould shock the pond water again if you want to keep plants in it, LOL. THe Iris will probably be ok, but if you wouwld have had any other plants in it, there probably would have been some dead plants :-(. I could have let you know of a better way to get rid of that green water without harming your plants. I think the umbrella palm would do fine in the area on the side of your house, as well of TONS of other water plants. When hunting for water plants to put over there, just look for plants that can be kept in 0 inches of water, or I can send you a list if you want, just give me a few days.

Smockette is the one that had the confederate jasmine. I got some also, but I was sick and in the hospital, then in bed for over 2 weeks after that and when I finally got to feeling better, it was a gonner. I had it in a pot in the kitchen window and no one bothered to water the thing when I was sick :-(.

I can't believe that the umbrella palm has done so well for you!

I think they are also doing a RU near Texoma in Sept??? I could be wrong, haven't had time to really keep up lately. Maybe Eye's can straighten us both out and give us the skinny on this.

Let me give the plstic edge problem some thought......I can think of several things that might work. I don't know that I woould put it around the entire thing, but what about monkey grass on the outside of the edge and parrot's feather around the inside?
Are you going to put any lilies in there? How deep are the shelves?

Gotta run now but will talk with you more later after Gary leaves and I have a bit more time.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about Gary's shipping out. I know it must be hard on you! Why are you writing to me, silly girl! Go snuggle up with him and stay of the puter...you'll have plenty of time for dgs in the next 12-24 months, unfortunately.

I went to get some plants yesterday, and will tell you what I got tomorrow because I don't remember what any of them are called. Not sure I want any water plants unless you tell me how I can keep it from being all nasty looking with green goop floating in it. Until we get our pool built, I need it to cool me off, and don't like it to be filled with slime!

The shelves are about 3-4 inches deep, I think, and the bottom is about 12-14 inches or something like that?

I've gotta get off the puter cuz my son needs to get online. He broke up with his girlfriend, and is now thinking he shouldn't have...gosh, I don't miss being 18!
