Holding cuttings?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I started hacking up the the seedling cuttings today so I can start shipping some out tomorrow. I've had the big branches outside in a couple buckets of water. Most are doing fine ... but there are a few that have started to rot. I've taken them all out of the water for now so they can dry a bit and so I can cut out any punky parts.

Now I'm not gonna be able to ship these all in one day. I'd imagine I'll be waiting a week or so for many of them while everyone's postage rolls in. My question is ... what do I do with them after I have them all cut up? Should I put them back in water? Or leave them dry? Seems like the big hardwood pieces will be okay dry for a few days. What about the green wood? I really wanted to leave the tips in tact because a couple have tiny Ys coming along. I'm afraid they'll rot in water tho & I really don't want to go through the hassle of potting them in soil.

How do you guys keep the cuttings alive when you plan to ship them out?

Very good questions for those of us who have never done this before, such as myself:)

Poppysue, by accident I left some cuttings lying out for several days. I then just stuck them down in a bucket of water for a few hours and they perked up just fine, then I stuck them in the vermiculite that I root them in. If you're keeping them in water, I think you need to change the water every day.(I've had no success at all with keeping them in water for more than overnight, they always rot)I bet you could stick them in potting soil or sand for a few days.

poppy, if you took an ice cream tub or something like that, just dump some soil in and stick the cuttings in, would that work? don't know of anything that will keep the green ones okay except potting.

Put them ON a damp papertowel, BOTTOM ONLY, inside a plastic bag, BOTTOM ONLY! would not cut too soon before ready to send, keep them in light, not dark, also warm.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Poppysue,
I finally put postage in the mail today. I kept forgetting. Hope it's not too late. Thanks.
