What's your favourite variegated-leaf houseplant, everybody?A kind shop-person gave me a long cutting of a green and gold Hoya today - thereby threatening to topple my favourite green and gold tradescantia from its long-held place. What are your favourites, everyone?
What's your favourite variegated-leaf house plant?
Hmmm..hard one.Maybe the variegated Cuphea,the Ctenanthe"golden wonder"(?),the Ficus pumila variegata,or the 2 huge F.benjaminas..maybe the Tulbaghia,or the Opuntia.Then there is the Jade,Alpinia and scented Geranium.....like I said that is a hard one!!I guess I like them all!

That really is a tough question! I like variegates in general. The tradescantia you mentioned is one I like a lot, and there's one I don't have that has pink and cream variegation.
What comes to mind of what I do have is the fittonias. I have one of the small leaved type with white veining, and the other is one I bought because I've never seen it before. This has pointed leaves! and though it has the pink variegation we've probably all seen, the whole plant structure is different. There is very little petiole (stem) to the individual leaves, and they are arranged in almost a basal rosette close to the soil line. They're in a terrarium with some very stubborn nonblooming orchids and they really help with the color situation in there.
And, of course, there's the entire Maranta family, the marantas, ctenanthes, and (mmmmm) Calatheas....
I like knowing you don't need flowers for color (though, don't get me wrong, ain't nothing like flowers!).
Sansevieria kirkii!!!
What's that like Sansman? I found the others but not yours.
Hmmm.... that is a hard one! SO many variegated *pretties*......
But at the moment, my favorite is variegated lipstick plant.
my bonsai ficus b. is the favorite i own,but ive seen some pics of monstera d. i like.
Right now, my Dracaena reflexa "Song of India" is looking mighty pretty, but just like so many other people here have said, my favorites change all the time.
Runners up would be my Iresine aureo-reticulata (Chicken gizzard) and my purple oxalis.
I have 2 'right now' favorites which, like others will probably change in short time! Graptophyllum Pictum...pretty shades of pink and cream. on green leaves....and Breynia Discticha Roseo Picta....again pretty shades of pink, and white on green.
i have a variegated peace lily im very fond of,ive been searching for a variegated aspidistra for ages now
Vinca: Try a www.google.com search for sansevieria kirkii pulchra. That is the variety I have. Cool plant!
Nan: You never cease to amaze me! Any chance we could talk you into starting an online album of your plants?
Ribbitcat: I love my variegated aspidistra, but it's a little trickier than the regular aspidistra to grow. If you want a very simple yet variegated (beautiful!) aspidistra, look for aspidistra milky way. Tiny yellow spots all over the leaves and really does well in lower light--no pest problems. The variegated aspidistra is very susceptible to spider mites.
Good luck in the hunt!
yes sansman im quite willing to put up with fussy, just cant seem to find any variegated aspidistras at all no how no where !
also even plain aspidistras cost fortunes, wonder if the var. are even more so
Hi Ribbitcat,I posted this link on another thread, but maybe you can try here: http://www.frogswell.com
She has some very nice plants, and yes..Varigated Aspidistra!
Hope this helps,Gwist
Awww....Sansman....I'd love to start an album...but honestly, I don't have a camera that works!....I'm really really wanting to get a digital - guess I should save my pennies and 'forego' spending on plants for awhile and get that camera!! I'm gonna try! THanks for your compliments...I like 'unusual', in shape, form, color, - *whatever*!!! And the faves change right along with the shape, form, color, bloom, etc..!
I have a variagated prayer plant, maranta. It's is so beautiful.
I have 4 or 5 Variegated Nephthytis Florida Fancy's that have alot of leaves that are 1/2 white and 1/2 green that is realy neat. I also have a Variegated Monstera on the way next month that I'm realy excited about!
C~
A variegated Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana)... though the variegated Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) is nice, too.... Both are only house plants until suitable outdoors spots can be located. Do great indoors, though.
