pruning brugs

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

was just wondering if I cut a brug down just below the "Y" will it grow much taller before it "Y" again???

Hamilton, Canada

Irish I believe it will have to grow a lot before it Ys again. Are you trying to get a shorter plant? Monika said to NEVER cut below the Y.

unless you are cutting back to the ground. If you want a standard, don't cut back below the Y.

I was wondering about the same thing(how far to cut back). It is the first year for my brug and it has sent out 3 limbs. Can I just leave these? Will they get freeze damage in my zone 8? So much to learn, but so nice to have such greaat help! Thanks, Jan.

if you want to bring it in (for those that freeze back) leave 6 nodes above the Y. if you get a freeze, it will grow back next year from the ground and get to full height then Y and then bloom. (if you are in a zone where they come back)

What I'm thinking is that I have a frosty pink that I would love to have it a few feet taller before the "Y" starts It's in the way of my shed door. I think I am going to cut it and see what happens

irish, if you cut it below the Y it will probably put out four new shoots at that point. best thing would probably be a seedling, some of mine have gotten to 6 feet plus tall before doing the Y.

Irish,
Take a long single cutting and root it again. It will have to grow an entire year before it produces a Y, or you can just prune away the side that is obscuring your doorway...something like a cascading bonsai look. Hope that helps.
