Gorse is considered a very bad plant here on the Oregon Coast. We are doing all we can to rid the area of it. Although the bloom is quite nice it is a nasty, thorny, takeover kind of plant. Also a fire hazzard. The seeds , I understand live for many , many years hence making it hard to eradicate.

Yes I know Yons, I didn't enter it into the PDB I just had some pics of it.

It's controlled here by burning, but as strange as it may seem it's actually a medicinal herb and is valuable to animals through a harsh winter here. There are quite a few plants in the PDB that are invasive somewhere or other that are very useful or delicate rarities to others. Perhaps you might like to add your comments to the entry, I shall be adding mine later today.

For a dreaded plant, it sure has a lot of common (and interesting) names :) Baa, thanks for the photo and I hope both of you will add your comments and ratings later on. The PDB is designed so that we can educate each other - even those plants that are invasive and unwelcome (otherwise, some unsuspecting soul might be tempted to cultivate some of these garden thugs...)

Thanks for pointing out the names Vols, it will help me illustrate a point here.

There are two basic reasons for plants to have a lot of common names, 1 because they are poisonous or 2 because they are useful.

I added photos to the Impatiens gladulifera entry too but I wouldn't advocate anyone growing that in their gardens either.

Thanks. I ordered some dog boots from a lady in Ireland and on the site someone said that the boots protected her dog's feet from the gorse. Now I know what she was talking about. Ouch!
