I have waited all spring and summer for this to bloom, and it just won't stop. Im going to need help on how to overwinter these. I have never grown them before.
They just keep on blooming
Aren't they great? Our own lovely MaVie sent me some seeds of this exact datura and the one seedling that I didn't manage to kill has grown huge and is covered in flowers.
If I'm not mistaken, datura is normally an annual (someone correct me if I'm wrong), but you should have tons of seeds from this plant.
very pretty
Great job!!! I managed to kill all of mine. Beautiful and full of blooms one day and drooped and dying the very next. So sad! Yours is spectacular!
PS I understand they will come back next year from the roots. They last 4 to 5 years by dying back in the winter and coming back from the roots. Though I do not know if that still holds true in your cold zone.
Tonny (our resident datura expert), where are you??
some datura do come back, others don't. this is from personal observation.
datura ceratocaula - white with lilac along the edges do die back and comes back to life when the temperature gets warmer. the flowers has a very lovely lemony scent. the datura ceratocaula i have plenty of seeds i have already harvested. these are the ones that forms bulbous roots and do come back each year. lmk.
so far, i have not been successful to grow datura metel,[purple, yellow, mauve] back to life, after frost. this growing season i will keep a close watch and see if they do come back to life. the datura metels, i have to restart planting seeds each year. at the moment, i do have seedpods that are forming, others are in the process of maturity. i will be having lots of seeds available if any one wants them.
Ma Vie, can you do cuttings? I have heard yes and no. I have some and they have not died yet but I have not checked them to see if roots are forming.
i do not know Kelley, i have not tried propagating cuttings from datura plants, since i got so many seeds. one thing do, i played around with the datura ceratucaula by trimming them to the shape i want. the whole plant grows to 3' tall and spreads to 5' wide. too space consuming. i can share every single variety i have with u. the metels will be a while cause the seed pods hasn't matured yet.
