Versi. Cuba from Arlene.......

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Finally I got to see this one bloom. Too bad the blooms don't stand out to the side so the pretty inside of the bloom would show without having to hold it up. Thanks Arlene. I'm hoping that next year it will really bloom up a storm.

Pretty Brugie. Is this a seedling cross or the REAL versi-Cuba?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have no idea. It just came with some other things Arlene sent me and of course, I had to grow it up. I've never seen a picture of a Versi. Cuba before. Maybe this is a cross. Will have to ask Arlene. When I first looked at it, it looked a lot like versi. orange. However, no recurve on this one.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh Brugie, if you get an extra.....

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I have a lot of the LBJ seedlings of the Ursaline x Cuba cross. I wonder if it's one of them or the real McCoy.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sure Cala. Will be a while though. Want to watch it bloom as long as I can.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

it's a versicolor cuba, JT sent it to me. i have ursaline x cuba with the first bloom opening tonight, is white still, just looked at it. it has that lemony smell.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

brugie, can you post a side shot?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brugie, no hurry, I've got to find somewhere to put these monsters I already have!!

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Very very pretty. Congrats Brugie!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Very pretty . Is it a big flower Shirley?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It is much bigger than the other versicolors I have like Versi. peach or orange and Versi. Milk N Honey. I haven't measured and I'm not even sure if the wind last night took it or not. I do have a poor picture of it hanging, so I'll stick that one on here until I can get back to check it. Remember, I said it was poor. I still can't get down on ground level to take pictures.

Shirley, Cuba is a nice looking hybrid, but it cannot match the beauty of Apricot Queen or Kaskade. I gave Cuba to Ludger.

Arlene, I didnt want to hurt you in any way. I know, you too got Cuba from another person.

Ms Monika, no problem!!!! i am not hurt. lots of us spent last year getting all that we could, now at least i have realized i have to be more selective. it isn't easy and i probably will keep some others wouldn't and get rid of some others wouldn't.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Arlene, many years ago, I was collecting like a nut, plants with pretty names like Teneriffa or Marakesch, but dissappointing flowers. If all US fanciers work serious and honest together, someday you will have the prettiest Brugmansia hybrids.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think I remember you saying, Monika, that yours went to the compost pile. Until I can get some of those that you all have across the water, I guess I'll be happy with what I have. I can only say right now, that this does not seem to be a heavy bloomer.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Thats got to be the hardest thing to do for me is decideing what I need to trash I want to keep them all but I know that being selective will be the way to having great brugs

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

it is hard irish. ms brugie, my v cuba is starting to bloom again and looks like it will have much heavier blooms this time.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Ludger picked it out of the compost again. Cuba is not a very heavy bloomer. Mme Blin got rid of hers too, so I guess, Cuba didnt do any better at her place.

I have beautiful flore plena x Cuba offspring. They were created by Mrs. Baum. Schwabenmädel, Touch of Apricot or Silver Dawn are very beautiful. The Problem, Mrs. Baum has a big mixup in her nursery. 1999, she gave cuttings to me, which still have the original tag, handwritten by Mrs. Baum. Touch of Apricot is supposed to be single flowering with occasionaly a stuffed double. Touch of Apricot is flowering here at the moment with huge double flowers. Wonder if it gets that touch of Apricot. The foilage of these hybrids is beautiful. The leaves are very thick velvet, round and serrated.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sounds really pretty. The leaves sound pretty enough to be by themselves. I am going to compost several of mine this year, keeping only those that I might want to use for hybridizing and maybe a couple that I just like for their looks when on the deck. Most are too big to make good deck plants.

Yes, pretty leaves is half of a beautiful hybrid. I grow one of Calas JO crosses and it got versicolor-like and very velvety leaves. The look soft and feels soft. Whiskers has also this kind of leaves, but not rich dark green as Calas hybrid. They are light geen, butthen there are the deep serration. I have not seen the flower of the hybrid, but I know, that regardless, what kind of flower it is, I will love to grow this one because f its foliage.

Speaking of composting plants. I decided to keep two or three of the best unnamed pink suaveolens hybrids I have, but the rest will either be composted or given away to not-collectors, that will love to grow them alone because oftheir beauty. The chimney sweeper was here today. He never saw a Brug in his life and he went entirely bazurk over the two pink plants from Aldi. Such big flowers? Wow! Pretty! *LOL* People often have this reaction with Brugs the first time they sees one. I will make some air layering this winter, so he can pick up a couple of the better brugs in the spring for his wintergarden.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Monika, would a brug that will not do well for you in your climate,do well in say Arlenes climate or Callas?

I guess what I'm asking is...Do the same characteristics hold true because of the plant and its genes or can the heat from down south turn a light bloomer into a heavy bloomer?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Many brugs, that dont do very well in my climate, bloom very well in warmer parts of Germany. But some are very reluctant bloomers, no matter in which climate. Marrakesch, Teneriffa, Cuba, Goldposaune and some more belong to the latter. Goldposaune has a broader corolla and a richer apricot as Kaskade or Apricot Queen but doesnt belong to the best bloomers. Goldposaune is worth a try if there would be a chance to send a young plant to arlene.

Hamilton, Canada

Tonny if you're composting send them this direction...I would love some more of the suaveolens. The Ida didn't make it...whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I have a little tiny stump leat and I've tried every method of rooting...it just keeps rotting from the bottom up.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

If this "Cuba" came from mine it is suspect.I obtained the
original cuttings from our "friend" at LBJ.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

lol, JT, what do you think it is?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It is looking like a company that should have had things straight has sent out a lot of misnamed stock. It isn't just one company either, happens all the time. So, what are we to do. I don't ever want to send out cuttings, if I can help it, of something that isn't what it is supposed to be. Just adds to the confusion down the line when those cuttings grow up and are sent out again. Soon, someone questions the plant, just like we do here and by then there have been 500 of them traded. I think this year I'll only mail out those that I am positive of. Cuts my plants in half. :-) Not that bad, but I do have some that I question.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

the sad part brugie is sometimes you just wouldn't even know to question it! guess i'll post a whole shot of v cuba in a day or two when the blooms open.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i'm doing the world a favor, tossing my suavolens/insignis type pink cuttings, white suavolens/insginis types....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Arlene, I'm getting rid of all the Frosty Pink types. Will keep Isabella, just for bloom. I guess there comes a time when we have to decided which ones we keep and which ones go. I'll only keep a couple cuttings from Eric's hybrids too. They look too much alike to keep all of them. I'm hoping it will be easier to grow them all next spring by cutting back also.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

brugie, i'm trying to remember, you posted a pic of eric's white, and the one you said blooms all the time. were there others?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Arlene, I don't remember posting one of Eric's white. Of course, I don't remember a lot these days. :-) The one I have isn't really white, it is a creamy or dirty white in color and not pretty. I have two or three that look like Frosty Pinks from his seedlings. The best one was the Isabella X Butterfly that I posted and a yellow one with no background information.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

brugie, the first one to open white you sent home with a neighbor!!!!! long ago and far away.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Oh yes, I do remember that one now. Well, I still don't need another white. Have too many now. Will drop down to probably one single and one double and that will be it for pure whites. I'm even dumping Tragedy 2001. Just no room for it.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i know what you mean, i have shovel pruned whites trying to grow in the woods! the nice looking whites i am giving to local people who don't have brugs. it was so funny, maryanne and john took one home 8-9 feet tall, the pot in the front floor board and her in the back seat.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Man, they must have really wanted that one. My mailman and his wife came out tonight and took a lot of cuttings. I didn't just give them little ones either, sent them home with enough for all of their neighbors too. I think they were a little overwhelmed. All Phil could talk about was getting home some he could get pots out of the shed. They must have taken at least 15 kinds. All they had this year was JP from me. Fell in love with her and now want more. Fine by me. Less for the compost heap.
