My double purple Datura has lots of seed pods. Some are cracking open but are still green. How do I collect the seeds? Are they ready when the pod cracks. Do I store them and how or do they need to be planted right away? Thanks, Jan.
Help! When do you Collect Purple Datura Seeds etc?
If they're cracking you better pick them. It doesn't take long for all the seeds to drop on the ground.
Thanks poppysue. How do I store these till Spring? Just let air dry and then in the frig?TIA Jan
Just let air dry and I store mine at room temp. until spring. I keep them in a covered container or baggie--make sure they are dry before storing in a closed container.
Thanks Debby. I understand this is an annual.(double purple) Will it grow from cuttings?Jan.
Jan, I always spread mine out and take out the fleshy stuff that's in there with the seeds. I had a whole plateful rot last year because that stuff seems to never dry!
Thanks tiG I'll do that. It's always so humid here that things dry slowly anyway. Makes it good for starting cuttings though. Do you start your Brug and Dat cuttings in water? perlite? or soil?
I start woody and semi woody ones in promix (or good soilless mix) and keep barely damp until I see new leaves, then I treat as usual. I have had real good luck with hardwood cuttings in water too.
Very very green ones I root the same, but keep almost dry.
Thanks tiG, I'm so excited that things grow well here. We had to move a very large gardenia last year in August. We cut it back and I rooted some cuttings for my daughter. (these were my first) The large plant also did well, putting on new growth this year. I plan to put in several new bed this fall. Such fun!
