Cover the Pond?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

In about 2 to 3 weeks, leaves will be coming down at least 2 feet thick. I was thinking of covering the pond (appro. 6'x9') with some kind of plastic to keep the leaves out. No fish. Any suggestions?

They sell covers made special for ponds. THey are made of a net material so it will keep the leaves out but leave the water open to more oxygen for your plants (and fish, but you don't have any). I have heard they work well, but have never used them myself. There are no trees near my pond and the plantings around the pond keep things from blowing over into the pond from other trees.

gold, I use bird netting. You can get it at Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, or just about anywhere. Then if necessary you can use a fish net to get anything that gets through that. Bird netting works great though.

Thanks much!

golddog, the bird netting works great, and saves you a lot of work cleaning out the leaves etc.

We use the netting and love it. It catches all the leaves and pine needles and keeps the pond so much cleaner...

I used netting for about two days a couple of years ago but stopped when the birds were getting caught in it when they wanted a drink from the water garden. I had to release three birds that were hopelessly tangled in it. Never again. I'll dig the leaves out instead.

Here what I did. Cost you 20.00 though and a little work.
Went to walmart and bought two Minnow Seine's Laced the two togather with the floats in the middle. The built in ties give you six tie points for tying to stakes. The lead weights on the outside helpl hold down the net also. Come in two sizes and more could be added to make a bigger net.

My frogs get tangled in the bird netting, but it works well, this year I'm going to use thin PVC pipe, make arches over the pond and then drape the netting over it....

I bought the birdnetting at Lowe's, 14'x14' for about $4.00. Trimmed of the excess, and am well pleased with it.
