Papaya Flower

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Two of our papaya have been blooming for months, both male, (or both) we think. A third looks like it's getting ready to bloom AND it looks like it may be female..Hooray!

Hi,

I don't know one papaya from another, but mine has blooms right on the trunk. They smell good too. I like the flowers on your papaya too. Will you get fruit from it? I would sure like to try some of your seed if you put it up for trade or SASE.

Brugie, Hi, the female blooms right against the trunk, the male on long stems, Both...I'm not sure. Since you have to have both sexes to get fruit we're thrilled with the thought of a female bloom. If we're right we'll get fruit, but I don't know how much cold the tree or fruit can take. If we get seeds I will certainly offer them.
I think this is my favorite flower scent. Ours scent the whole part of the garden they're in. It's wonderful.

I didn't know they were fragrant.

Maybe I haven't been looking closely. I have fruit on mine now, but I've been told that once the temps are below 50 for a lengthy period of time, it will be done. Mine is in the ground, and would be too hard to dig up, besides, it would also be too big for the house. I would never try to grow for the fruit here in Iowa, but it is cool seeing it there anyway. A great tropical plant for a tropical looking garden too.

Oh Cala they smell wonderful! I'll stick a flower stalk in the box with the plant.

OK, in Mexico what I thought were papayas weren't. These were one stalk plants, big leaves at the top and big yellow flowers right under the leaves against the stalk. Wonder what they were?

They are a very pretty plant, very tropical looking. I'm afraid ours will just get mulched heavily and then we'll cross our fingers. LOL There aren't any really big ones in my neighborhood but there's some big ones a little further south of here.

Mine is similar to what you mention, Cala. However, the blooms are small, a little over an inch across, and pale yellow with a wonderful smell.

Oh I can't wait!! I'll put it in the Jungle House.

Floridian can you post a picture of the female flower when it blooms please...thanks.

Really pretty plant.

Floridian - My uncle grows them in Orlando with no problem. Are you much further north than that?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi weeds! We're actually about 40-50 miles south of Orlando as the crow flies. I think our papaya will be okay. I'm afraid a lot of things will be on their own this winter aside from a little prayer and crossed fingers! LOL
