She fell over last evening, broke some leaves and lost some big buds, but survived pretty good.
Rosamond/Pink Beauty
That looks just like the one I have. What are you calling yours. In absence of a decision from Monika I am thinking of settling on Rosamond. On the other hand I may just call it "that big pink brug"
I think she should be sent up north for safe keeping....stay away from those nasty winds....
OK, CC, she's about 10 ft tall, will you pay postage?
Oh my........Could you fold it in the box???
You betcha!I'm not kiddin either!
She really is pretty. So dark and that is what I like.
OhboyOhboyOhboy~~~I just LOVE that picture!
Liz, I didn't even have to lie down for this one. This brug I'm not kidding is 10 feet tall. I was up on a ladder pollinating it and still couldn't reach one branch. Don't know what I'll do with it till the pods ripen.
How are you going to get her inside and will she stand up okay in there? Is the greenhouse roof tall? Did you read that I air layered mine below the Y so I could save the seed pods? Worked great. I have no place to bring in big brugs. Boy, this post was full of questions.
This is a beauty Cala. Nice dark blooms.
Brugie, no, where did you post that??? I may have to do that. The center of the greenhouse is tall, can't remember, but I think 11 or 12 feet. I'll have to get DH to move her, almost killed me trying to repot it. I didn't hurt my back, kept telling myself "lift with your legs" and finally got it into the new pot. Gave her some plant food to settle her in which will probably make it grow more!!
You're going to have to dig down and lower the floor calla. LOL
I can do that, lol. I'd have a 2 level greenhouse.
Hey Liz, that is a good idea, but that brug would be a permanent fixture in the greenhouse after that. :-)
Susie, I don't remember what thread it was one, but just recently anyway. Took about three weeks to have a bag full of roots and when I cut the stalk off below the roots and planted it, there was very little shock. I knocked one bud off when I was tying it up, and today it lost some of the lower leaves, but it is still perky. I've done several of mine with pods this way.
will you tell us how you did it? materials used I mean, I know the basics.
I just wrote this to Snow and maybe someone else who doesn't know what we're talking about can understand it better by my putting the whole thing in here.
Air Layering isn't really easy for one person. Two people would work better than one. I soaked the sphagnum well and carried it, water and all to the garden with me. I used those food storage bags and split them down the side and bottom so I just had a long piece of plastic. Took masking tape with me too. I kind of put some of the wet sphagnum in the plastic in my hand and grabbed hold of the place I was going to put it. Then, while holding it I tried to wrap the plastic so I could get the tape started around the bottom. Once I got it started and taped enough to hold the sphagnum, I then spread the stuff around in the plastic and added more to fill it up fairly well. Then it was just a matter of holding it shut while I taped some more. I did cut about three small slits in each of the bags to allow some air circulation and thought if it dried out I could inject some water, but it never dried out. Worked super for me. I have about 4 or 5 more to get cut off, but I hate to do it when they are getting ready to open a flush of bloom.
1. where did you get the moss, I can't find it.
2. did you cut a slit in the brug at all? or not?
I got the moss at our local greenhouse. Comes in a small 1 cubic foot bale or bag. I didn't cut a slit in the brug. Just wrapped it. Do a search for the moss online. I'm sure there are lots of places that carry it. WalMart used to have it too.
thanks, I'll try and find it. If I can do this, I might not dig up a couple that I'm thinking of doing now.
I cut off a piece of PB or whatever she is called, and it was probably a good 4 ft. long. Couldn't believe how well it worked.
Oh Brugie, that's great!! I didn't know you could do that without making a slit in the brug stem!! Thanks.
Yes, and it works so quickly too. Sure surprised me.
Wonder if ProMix would work. It's 85% sphagnum with vermiculite. It says on the bag you can root cuttings with it.
Sphagnum moss is sold in Walmart and Home Depot. u got to ask store clerk where they 'hide' it. i normally find them where the tropical plants and pots are located. inside the building not outside. hope that helps.
I was about to airlayer here Brugie on my sangs, but I was going to cut all the way around the tree limb about an inch. You just saved me a big chore!!! So you did it on the woody part or on green?
I would say its Rosamond. Cala, the huge flowers of Rosamond belong to the best.
change yo tags girl!
I air layered several of mine but I haven't even checked to see if they rooted yet. I spose I better get out there and look since it's been a couple of weeks.
Brugie - you didn't use rooting hormone? I used some of the powder. I just made a small cut on one side if the stem, peeled off a sliver of bark, and brushed on the rooting powder. I did some with spagnum that I collected from a marshy area down the road. I also did some with coco fiber. I think you can use regular peat moss too. I wraped mine with plastic & then with tin foil. I'll have to go peek under the foil and see how they're doing. I didn't think they'd root so quickly.
Bump...
I love this pic!!
LOL Brugie! I remember this about airlayering! Now sometimes I do not even airlayer at all! I just cut off the sucker and stick it in dirt, attach it all the way up to a stake. I have about 6 rooting just like this now even in the in winter outside! All are over 6 feet! I am so lazy!
A friend also clued me into using silver foil, that way you do not need help of tape or anything. You just squeeze it tight around the top and bottom of the moss!
The roots grow great and fast!
I use air layering on plants, which are difficult to root and also on old trees with strong stems.
