I have 2 pumps that will be going inside soon. Any cleaning or maintenance needed?
Winter Storage
Clean them before storage because taking the dried stuff off in the spring can be a real chore. If they are pumps that are in pond pumps I have read that they will last longer if stored in clean water. If they are in-line exterior pumps then they can be stored dry. Also any oiling that is required by the owners manual should be taken care of now. Good ponding. Lani
Thanks much!
All pumps have rotating shaft seals between the motor and the pump unit. It is important when starting up in the spring to not run the pump dry as this can quickly cause the shaft seal to fail and water will then leak between the pump and motor.Do not even turn it on to test operation until water is put in the pump housing to prime it or, in the case of submersible type pumps, they are placed underwater.
Gold dog, Store your pumps in water. We learned the hard way....... Had to replace 2 pumps, because my DH said,"They didn't come packed in water."But really make sure they are clean before you put them away.
I will store them in water. Thanks!
