No Canna Swap

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

This decision for a Canna Swap sounded fine in theory, but in reality, too many sidebars.

Traders want to trade today, in 2 weeks, in 2 months; want to know what they will receive in return; some can trade 1; some want to trade 15; some want only certain colors; some aren't sure if a certain plant is a Canna or somerthing else.

The conclusion: a Canna swap in not practical. The timing is the major factor.

I must apologize for screwing this one up. I should have given it more thought before suggesting it. No harm; no foul.

There is no reason why we can't trade individually at "Plant Trading". It will bring harmony to this frustrating swap.

Golddog.......send me your list, and I'll send you mine. It will be the first to middle of October when I dig.

I don't blame you golddog - you just can't keep everyone happy all the time. Whatever happened to throw the names in the hat - lol!

I thought about joining but only have a few cannas and thought I might be disappointing someone that was expecting something wonderful. I'm a canna "newbie" and just have a few named varieties and a couple of un-named dwarfs. If there's another canna newbie that would like to trade with me out there feel free to give me a holler.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

You tried! Sounded like a great idea. Sorry it couldn't happen.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I will have a named canna whose name I lost, in a few weeks, and will be more than happy to send starts to about five people initially. I am going to San Antonio to divide some I planted in DD's front garden and which needs to be reined in. It's really tall there, about 7 feet, as they water with automatic irrigation twice a week and the climate if mild. The bloom is small, not the big floppy one, and the best I can describe it is a reddish orange. It was supposed to be pink, but someone goofed in the garden center. I wouldn't be opposed to trading for some daylilies, as long as they are good colors, and would really love to get some in red shades. But my primary aim is to tame that bed. Let me know if you are interested in the cannas.

Sykesville, MD(Zone 7b)

Golddog, it still was a good idea. Now some trades will happen just because of you =)
Shirley1md, IF you DO have Panache, I'd love one.(hint, hint) I don't have any canna yet. Didn't realize it'd survive out here! I'll get my list of "trading goodies" for Oct. 12th and give you first look, ok?

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Yes you tried but sometimes there are just to many zones that it makes it almost impossible. Thanks for trying.

Ace, TX(Zone 8a)

Golddog that's OK you tried. If anyones interested I have Pink Sunburst, Indica Red Stripe and Striped Beauty (yellow), unfortunately only enough for one or two trades. I can dig and send now.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Cajunace,

I love the striped ones. Would you like to trade for Pretoria/Bengal Tiger and Tropicanna? (I've got to look up Pink Sunburst.)

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

cajunace, I would really like a start of Pink Sunburst(lost mine), and Indica Red Stripe. Please see my trade list.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

As a bystander, may I suggest you consider a canna round-robin? If you start with the coldest zone participants and work the box toward the warmest zone, you could probably make it work with everyone's digging times.

It also eliminates the problem of uneven trades, as you can take as many from the box as you'd like, as long as you put an equivalent number of plants back in.

There are others who have more experience at setting up round-robins, and they could give you more details on how to make it run smoothly, if you're interested :)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

the postage would kill us!

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

second.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Ooops. You're right - I forget how much those things weigh. I only grow a handful myself, but now that I think about it - a box full would not only wipe out your bank accounts, but probably throw out the backs of several USPS workers in its path :)

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Very true, GV! I knew your wise counsel would prevail.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Three years ago we gave away about 300 lbs (dried) of cannas! Too true about the weight killing us :D

Not to mention planting them every spring and digging them up every fall. But I miss them.
