Golddog is organizing a canna swap in the plant trading forum. If anyone is interested, please let us know.

canna swap
I saw a posted message from "golddog" that it has been "cancelled". However, individual trading is always an option.
I only have two kinds right now (mine and the ones at my neighbor's house...hehe), but I'm definitely interested in getting in on that!!! I'm on a list for some zodiacs on order, so I am hoping my canna collection will someday be very nice!!!
Meiyu:
Do you know the name of yours'??
sure hibiscus...it's the peachy-orange one!! hahaha!!! heck no, honey, i just recently joined up with you all, and found out that there are more than three colors. there are, however, a few pics floating around...check photos forum?
meiyu
I have your pics and it is a pretty one!!
i have tons of seeds available, if you'd like some, hibiscus!! i also have red ones...i'm trying to get the guts to go take a pic of them (they're my neighbors)
The Canna Swap is definitely still on! I corresponded with Golddog about it earlier today, and since then he has made a couple of posts updating everyone on its progress in the original thread. So, if any of you want in, go post on that thread, or email Golddog.
He is matching up pairs for canna rhizome trades. Most are for two named varieties, but I think they can be for any number as long as there are two people who are offering the same number.
There are time-line considerations, too. We southerners are happy to trade as soon as possible, while the northerners want to wait until frost kills the tops of their cannas, and they have to dig up all their rhizomes for storage anyway. So, golddog is trying to make everyone happy by matching people who want to trade around the same time.
rik, where's that thread?
Whoooooa! I just went to check the original thread, which is in Plant Trading, and it seems that, as of around 8:00 this evening, Golddog had a major breakdown and threw the whole thing up:
"This decision for a Canna Swap sounded fine in theory, but in reality, too many sidebars.
Traders want to trade today, in 2 weeks, in 2 months; want to know what they will receive in return; some can trade 1; some want to trade 15; some want only certain colors; some aren't sure if a certain plant is a Canna or somerthing else.
The conclusion: a Canna swap in not practical. The timing is the major factor.
I must apologize for screwing this one up. I should have given it more thought before suggesting it. No harm; no foul.
There is no reason why we can't trade individually at "Plant Trading". It will bring harmony to this frustrating swap."
wow...there are really people who don't know what a canna is!!! dang, i feel better now, rik! i thought i had to be the absolute most ignorant living member of dg's...but i at least know what a canna is, even if there are more than the 3 colors i've seen..hahaha!
Great! Then I have a question for you.
Someone recently gave me a plant that, at first glance, I thought was a young banana tree, but he said that it was a canna. That seemed reasonable. It looked like it could be an unusual canna.
Here's the catch: It has a red stalk and green leaves. The only thing I can find close to it, with a red stalk and green leaves, is Red Thalia, which some people call a canna and some don't. The bloom of a Red Thalia certainly looks nothing like a canna bloom.
Red Thalia is aquatic, but these plants were growing in soil in a stand of pines far from any water, and the rhizomes look very much like canna rhizomes.
Can you tell me what I have?
Meiyu, if you want more canna, I will have some to divide in SA soon. Also have loads of seeds from them. Email me about your area of town.
Meiyu...hope the neighbors don't have a gun???
Okay.......everyone post a wish list in this thread or golddog's and match up your own wishes and trades. Canna's are part of the Banana family, BTW. There are many diffentent bloom types, foilage, sizes and colors. Look at my wanted list, and see what I mean, and this is just the tip of the iceburg.

I'm in if its seeds. Can't get tubers through to the U.S. I don't think. I'm another poor soul who doesn't know the names of cannas but I have tall red which is common, variegated burgandy/green stripe with red flower, watermellon colored flower and dwarf yellow. I'll take surplus seeds from anyone who has them coming out their ears. Next year I guess I better order some named varities so I'll have lots more to share. What I do have flowered from seed in a single year if that helps anyone. I'm still harvesting seeds so I'll know better what I will have come October...besides mine are coming indoors as there are now so many shouts coming up that I'm just going to let it continue growing. I know I already promised CC, Meiyu and Eyes seeds.
Rik if you have surplus of the Thalia I would like some. I lost my Thalia I had in my small pond last year.

rik, i don't know the names of the ones i have, but i think you've maybe seen pics? if not, they're in photos..not photoid, the other one. my neighbor's pics, i haven't taken yet, but it actually sounds a bit like yours, only a big flower like mine, i think...maybe that was the other red ones i tried to steal...can't remember. i tried taking a pic, but it's been raining constantly lately. will try to post tomorrow. i'd like to trade seeds (since i just found out the one i planted worked today...HURRAY!!!!) or, preferably root/tuber, i don't know what you call it. if you don't want mine i don't mind paying and will buy anyone's cannas if i don't already have it!!
aimee, what do you mean in SA...do you have property here? come see me!! i'm in the stone oak area, way north from downtown on 281, just before you get to bulverde, tx. i'd love to meet you!!!
hibiscus, they probably do, but when aimee comes i'm gonna tell them she did it...!!! hehehe!!
wings, you have a baby candlestick plant in the mail tomorrow. do you want to try to take one of these cuttings of the allamanda? i can't remember if you wanted it or not, but i have 75, so i was thinking if anyone wants one, maybe they shoud take one now, just in case i kill all mine.
yeah, joydie, don't forget about meeeee!! hahaha!! by the way, email me and make sure i have the list of things i'm supposed to mail out to you tomorrow, so i don't mess up again!! i have a note to myself by the front door, so i will double check when your email comes and plan to go to the post office in the afternoon (not a morning person)!!
everyone...i had 3 of the small india rubber vine seed pods break open today into thirds. i don't understand why they didn't get as big as the first one which is huge, and still not opened, but there are seeds in them just like the ones rik (i think?) said he'd gotten from a friend...lots and lots of tiny seeds with like a silvery feathery hair to help them fly. i got lucky, cuz it's been raining so much that they were wet and didn't fly away. i noticed that many of the other pods have disappeared...i didn't even see them open! i think i have 5 or 6 sections left for anyone hwho wants to try growing them...rik, i'm already sending you some unless you tell me not too.
one section is for me Meiyu...lol... I'll check your email to see what else you are to send in the way of seeds...
i think i sent you a bunch of seeds today, joydie1, but the little purple flower, because it's been raining for days, and they're all soggy. i will pick them when it dries up and mail to you, k?
sounds good meiyu...thanks. I better take those pics you sent and post them on the forum to get them identified so I can label them.
eyes -- Thanks for letting me know that I wasn't completely off base when I thought this ... whatever-it-is was a banana tree. Besides the red stalk and green leaves, I think that the characteristic that gave me the impression of a banana tree was that the leaves were well spaced on the stalk and stood out horizontally, perpendicular to the stalk. If anyone has an idea of what this is, I would love to hear from you.
BTW, eyes, as I perused your wish list, I noticed three somewhat hard-to-come-by items that I happen to have. I'll give you two hints: They're not cannas, and they're not daylilies. Let me know if you'd like to talk. But don't bring up zinnias -- that's one plant that will die as soon as it sees me. I don't know why, but some people can raise some plants, and some can raise other plants. I have never been able to keep a zinnia alive.
Meiyu -- OH do you know me!! Those seeds will be planted before the envelope hits the ground! Thank you for thinking of me. Baby #1 is royally potted in a place of honor and cotinues to look perfectly healthy. I expect he is expanding his root system, since he is not growing more leaves yet. Please let me know if you have tips on germinating these seeds.
Joydie -- I have several small rhizomes of the alleged Red Thalia and one huge one -- well over a foot long and snaking every direction. I imagine the larger rhizome can be separated into sections, but, if you live on a planet that will only allow you to receive seeds, I don't know how we would manage it (I see no information about your location, so I can't anticipate the obstacles) -- and I saw no trade list for you. Do you want to suggest something?

rik, i know nothing about those seeds. the pods opened when it was raining heavily, and they were very wet, so i laid them out to dry out...big mistake! when i went back to check on them the next day, half of them were gone!!! dried up and blown away to make home somewhere else!! now i know why it became a weed in some countries where it's not dry and limestone like here. the poor seeds would've done better to stay with me and let me send them to someone who cares, but they didn't know better, i guess. you were one of the lucky 4 who even got seeds. i hope you can get them to work. i sent the ones i salvaged to those whom i felt had the best chance of growing them, you being at the top of the list! good luck!!
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmn.......let me go look again at my list...not cannas.......not day lily.........must be ??? Is it really!!!! Let me know, Rick.
"eyes"
... and not gingers and not irises....
One of them just became very accessible on this site, but that still leaves two.
You guess it and we'll trade boxes. You know what I like by now.
Hibiscus? Crinium Lily?............aaaaaaaaaaahhhhh, got ya!! Taro!!!!!
"eyes"
Plumeria??
eyes, you like plumeria? i'll bring you some in october. what color do you want? did you get the cassia? i think i put a hydrangea cutting in there for you too. you should've gotten it today.
rik, i think i'm gonna stick to that passiflora (?) vine, if that's okay...ma vie is sending me some coleus, i think. i know they're not ready yet, so take your time.
Ok, eyes, they are black taro (but if you are not in on Calalily's Co-op, you really should be! -- What an opportunity!), crinum and Phaseolus caracalla (snail vine - not rooted at the moment). I have a couple of hibiscuses (hibiscii?), too, but nothing extraordinary -- large red and double apricot. I'm sure neither are 'hardy.'
Meiyu, What is Ma Vie sending you???? I have to know if there is something extraordinary coming in from the Philippines!
I have no passifloras, but I'll send the pandora when it is ready. Did you ask Jim about it?
oh, rik...that's what i meant...sorry!!
Meiyu...........I got it on the 18th and posted in Mail Call! Yes, you sent Hydrnagea as well.......I hope it roots!! I'll bring you an assortment of goodies to the round up. I love Plumera.....especially pinks and the rainbow one!!
Rik......Whoopee.....now what do I have you want? You have the snail vine, and double apricot Hibiscus??? I got a lot of Criniums from the neighbor this week. LMK.
